How FeiBit uses TI ZigBee® technology to bring the IoT into the home

We continue to see a surge of home automation devices which are intended to make our homes “smarter” and more efficient. Today ZigBee® technology is the industry’s leading global wireless standard used to help create a smarter home that enhances the comfort, convenience, security and energy management for the home. ZigBee provides the ability to remotely control lights, access to a door lock without using a key and wirelessly control for the curtains and blinds. To get a better understanding of the type of ZigBee based smart home solutions that are entering the market, we asked FeiBit about their innovative new products, powered by the TI ZigBee CC2530 wireless microcontroller (MCU).

1. What is FeiBit and FBee?

FeiBit, which means “Flying Bits” Electronic Technology Co.,Ltd was established in 2010 in Shenzhen, China. Since then, it has focused on ZigBee technology and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, building its own ZigBee module testing lab and production lines, which passed ISO9001/14001 authentication, producing over 1 million modules in 2015. FeiBit has a strong IoT solution development team including over 40 engineers to support more than 50 categories of products.

  

FeiBit believes that things will be fully connected and interoperable in the coming IoT world. The company is working to provide hardware and software to help developers build a “turn-key solution” network which follows the ZigBee Home Automation or ZigBee Light Link standards.

4. There are many wireless connectivity technologies on the market. Why did you choose to develop ZigBee based products at FeiBit?

ZigBee technology is the only global, standards-based wireless solution that can conveniently and affordably control the widest range of devices to improve comfort, security and convenience for consumers. In addition to smart home, today, ZigBee technology is used by a variety of cable and telecommunication companies.. These companies are using ZigBee technology in their set-top boxes (STB), satellite transceivers and home gateways to deliver home monitoring and energy management solutions to their customers.

5.       Why did you choose TI’s ZigBee CC2530 wireless MCU for your products?

TI has a long history of manufacturing and a good reputation for quality and stability for their wireless connectivity solutions. TI is also considered a global semiconductor supplier and has support channels worldwide. This really helps us to integrate systems with all clients.

We specifically selected the C2530 wireless MCU because it provided a high level of integration in a SoC solution, excellent RF performance and TI provided an industry leading Z-stack solution.

6. Can I build my own cloud and smart home gateway using FBee ZigBee module, and how?

We have built the whole ZigBee smart home ecosystem, which includes products, gateway, cloud and APP. So, YES, anybody who wants to build their own ecosystem is able to with our solutions.  We have different ZigBee modules which have feature-fixed firmware for some “standard” ZHA/ZLL/ZigBee3.0 products, and also flexible “ZigBee data transfer modules” which allow development on any IoT devices and are interoperable with standard devices. There are three ways to get started:

1) Your gateway is based on Linux/Android.

  • We will provide you with the “ZigBee Coordinator module” and “ZigBee Gateway middleware”, then you can use your own “User Program” to “talk” to the FBee middleware through an internal socket connection, then you can port the ZigBee devices to your own cloud.

2) Your gateway is based on a non-standard RTOS.

  • We will provide you with the “ZigBee Gateway module” (or a USB Dongle) which is built on an ARM® Cortex®-M3 microcontroller and talks to your MCU through UART.

3) You don’t have a gateway, all you need is to port FBee Gateway to your cloud.

  • We will provide you with a gateway which includes a hardware and software development kit, that allows you to develop your own software.

7. Where do you see your technology/solution going in the next five years?

ZigBee technology is the only global wireless networking standard focused on the special requirements of device-to-device communication, the foundation of the IoT. Smart home products will definitely keep on booming in the next few years and we are devoted to building smarter, more energy-efficient and secure homes.
