I recently had the immense pleasure of touring the CCRMA (pronounced Karma) at Stanford University, being a former musician myself, it was blissful.

The Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics is a place full of amazing innovation.  Housed at the historic Knoll, the center is a place where composers and researchers work together using computer-based technology both as an artistic medium and as a research tool.  That’s where beagle comes in.  Being a low power, linux based, computing platform, Beagleboard enables applications previously running on tethered PC’s to get up and go, or get up and make some music.

With names like Beepinballs, SoundFlinger and Quadraofeelia instruments developed in Music 250 “Physical Interaction Design for Music” show we can physically interact with electronic sounds in real time. Instructors Wendy Ju and Edgar Berdahl developed wiki based lab exercises using “Satellite CCRMA”, a Musical Interaction and Sound Synthesis Platform which also has a Google group set up for trading tips and how-to’s.  Shown at NIME this year in Oslo,  Satellite CCRMA is a hit w/ the developers.

One of my favorites at the CCRMA this trip was to see Stompbox in action.  Check out more videos on their youtube channel
