Thank you for your response.

The idea of smart garbage bins itself is not new. As I have mentioned, there are even commercial smart bins available today! Your mail helps me illustrate what innovation means. I want you to ask your parents how much they paid for their first computer or the first cellular phone. Also find out what functionalities they supported, how much storage they had, what speed they operated at, etc. Compare them to what you paid for your computer and what functionalities/features your computer supports. Constant innovation has helped bring the improvements we see in electronic equipment.

I am happy to hear that you think the problem is hard to solve. Challenges are supposed to be challenging! If you are convinced that the problem is worth solving, you must put on your thinking hats and see how you will come up with a solution that will address the problems you have pointed out. Please note that there are many solutions to a problem. To solve the problem of summer heat, you can use a hand fan, a ceiling fan, a table fan, an air cooler, or an air conditioner. All these solutions coexist and cater to different needs and markets. Is there a "hand fan" equivalent of a smart bin?

Thanks for writing. Keep thinking!

Regards,

I'd like to mention that Morgan-Claypool publisher does have a great way for students to have free access to their books via online library. Over 300 universities have books in the Synthesis series (including Bad to the Bone) licensed. " This access includes unlimited simultaneous usage campus-wide as a course text or on e-reserve, as well as the ability to save, print, or e-mail any title in the collection (all titles are delivered in PDF). If you are a student or faculty member at any of these institutions, you can access Synthesis ": www.morganclaypool.com/.../licensed

To access the book www.morganclaypool.com/.../S00500ED1V01Y201304DCS041 and click "view PDF" at the bottom or right side of the page.

Students at universities not on the licensed list, have access on that link to download via purchase ($20 e-copy PDF). If you are an instructor evaluating for a course adoption, you can receive a free PDF by contacting Morgan-Claypool at info@morganclaypool.com or you can discuss the library licensing options.

See e2e.ti.com/.../2033.teaching-materials.aspx to get hold of CD-ROMs for TI's embedded processors. You will also find text books on TI's processors, some of which are available in e-book form. Here is an example, the "Bad to the Bone" ebook can be found at www.ebooks.com/.../barrett-steven-f-kridner-jason - the Beaglebone Black is based on Sitara processor from TI. You will find plenty of support materials on how to use TI's processors if you start looking. We will be glad to see your feedback on your search experience!

I am glad to know of your interest. I suggest that you try the methodology outlined in my blog. It may save you some effort. I don't intend to discourage you, but I wanted to ensure you are aware of the scale of the problem. There may be other sensors that might help. Keep thinking!

The proposed idea of 'Smart dustbin' is a smart concept to be brought out. I think here mainly sensors have to be smart enough.

My idea of smart dustbin is to have a computer vision sensor which senses the waste and classifies it into one of its types like dry waste, medicine waste, hazardous waste..etc. We should have different containers for different wastes to be segregated. Then depending on sensors classification the corresponding container should open the lid, indicating through a glowing LED.

I think this kind of smart dustbin will be best suited for corporate offices, shopping malls, hi-tech hospitals,hotels....etc. If this turns out into reality I think this will be the first foray of making dustbins smart. I look forward to more interesting things from you sir.
