Today TI announced my new role, leading our Analog business. I’m excited about this opportunity to help overcome your toughest challenges. I have seen first-hand the benefits of TI’s large analog footprint early in my career as I had the privilege of leading TI’s analog field applications team. More recently our MCU team applied TI analog technology as we integrated a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) operating at 75uA in a microcontroller (MCU) to help achieve a new low in power consumption on the Wolverine MSP430 platform.

With TI, you have at hand the leading performance, power and packaging options in each major analog product category, as well as a rapidly expanding embedded processing portfolio. This broad, deep portfolio allows you to meet a host of system design challenges, and take advantage of unique combinations of products to develop winning designs faster.

With the largest worldwide sales and applications team in the industry and leading design environment, including WEBENCH design tools, you can select, evaluate and design with our analog products more easily.

And you can have confidence in TI as your analog source, thanks to our manufacturing and technology capabilities, including our 300-mm analog fab, RFAB.

These are factors that customers tell us matter in the real world of your competitive marketplace. And the real world is analog.

We know customers have choices among analog suppliers, and we want to be the first choice for even more customers. That’s my mission as I begin leading TI’s Analog business.

I’d love to hear what challenges we can help you with. You may have some questions about what kinds of changes bringing National and TI together will have for you as a customer. So I will be posting answers to a few questions here in the coming weeks.

One important topic for customers like you, designing with analog ICs, is availability of a full selection of devices to solve the specific challenges you are addressing in your designs. You want to know whether you will continue to have access to the products that meet your needs and whether our innovation will stay ahead of your requirements. The short answer is: Yes.

Together, we now place at your disposal a combined portfolio of almost 45K analog products with the performance, power and packaging options you have come to expect from TI and National. And with our long-standing policy that we will not obsolete analog and logic products for “convenience purposes,” you can count on us to continue making those products as long as we are technologically capable of doing so. For your reference, we have posted our 2003 news release about the policy.

That answers the question about existing products, but what about innovation? Well, that is the part that I am most excited about. Together we now have even more analog experts working together to design and develop industry-leading analog products to fuel your innovation. And these analog engineers now have at their disposal the entire combined portfolio of leading analog and power process technologies to optimize their designs for your toughest challenges. So you can expect even more innovation and new products from us now that we are together – to address the signal chain and power needs in applications like high bay LED lighting, chemical sensors, portable ultrasound and solar micro inverters, just to name a few.

I hope you have seen our news today that TI has signed an agreement to acquire National Semiconductor. As the leader of TI’s Analog business, I’m really excited about what this will mean for TI and National, but I am just as excited about what I believe this marriage of two leading analog suppliers will mean for our customers. It will mean a lot – more product options, more extensive sales and applications network, and manufacturing capacity to support your growth.

First of all, we want you to know you will be able to find the parts from National that you have come to rely on and you will not have to go to a lot of extra work requalifying products from different manufacturing plants. Our goal is a seamless, hassle-free merger for the customer. We will continue to use National’s fabs so no requalification will be required. Part numbers from both companies will remain the same so you can continue finding the products you need. And with TI’s obsolescence policy you can rest assured that we will continue to supply the parts you need as long as you need them.

When you are designing the analog portion of a system you often look first for the ICs with the right specifications to match the application requirements. And with the combination of National’s 12,000 and TI’s 30,000 analog products, you will have an excellent portfolio to suit your specific requirements. We’ll support that with best-in-class online tools, and you will find it easier than ever before to select the right devices and design them into your system.

TI over the years has built an industry-leading sales and applications force, and we are looking forward to having the talented sales and applications teams from both companies join up. Together, we will be able to partner with customers to solve system-level design challenges in motor designs, battery management, LED lighting, mobile applications, you name it.

Manufacturing capacity continues to be constrained in the semiconductor industry, and TI has opened new fabs and expanded our manufacturing presence around the world over the past couple of years. Joining our manufacturing resources with National’s is going to give us significant headroom to support your growth and help you deliver the end equipment that will help you win in your markets.

Thanks for reading. You may have some more questions, and we will bring updates from time to time through this blog and answer questions we’re hearing from customers over the next several months. We’d love to hear your comments or questions.
