How do you get a generation of youngsters to be interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)? Speak to them through video games, of course!
The winner of the 2013 TI Intern Design Challenge BeagleBone Black People’s Choice award hopes his creation, the GamingCape, will encourage kids to learn more about STEM subjects. Intern Max Thurn built a full-fledged handheld gaming console with a BeagleBone Black at its core.
“Especially for children, I think that gaming is an interesting topic and a way to get them drawn to technology and show them the actual process you can go through to build your own gaming system,” said Max.
For the Best Technical Design award, the BeagleBone Black got sensitive. Intern Michael Leonard successfully decked out his BeagleBone Black with as many add-ons as possible. His SensorCape can sense motion, pressure, altitude, humidity, ambient light, non-contact temperature and ambient temperature. He hopes others will take his design and be inspired to create something new.
