Quirky robots, fire-breathing metal dragons, and a parade of amazing prototypes can mean only one thing - Maker Faire is finally here! Maker Faire is a family-friendly festival filled with a mix of innovative and creative designs and is a place where Makers of all kind can gather together to celebrate their creations. This year at the San Francisco Bay Area Maker Faire, we will be demonstrating MCU LaunchPad-based projects, holding a few giveaways and sharing some exciting news for the Maker community! Energia – Simple code editor for the LaunchPad

We are excited to share Energia with the maker community at Maker Faire! Energia is an open-sourced, community-developed integrated development environment (IDE) developed with MCU LaunchPad and BoosterPack designers in mind. BeagleBone Black and the BeagleStache

What Maker Faire is complete without BeagleBone Black open-source Linux computers? The Maker Shed booth will have 200 of these boards, based on our Sitara™ AM335x ARM®\ Cortex™-A8 processor, available for purchase. Our own Jason Kridner will also be at the show with his BeagleStache cam, so track him down if you want to electronically “grow” an irresistible mustache and show it to your friends on Twitter. These BeagleStaches look great on men, women and babies alike!

MAKER FAIRE: #NAMEThatMaker GiveAWAY CONTEST RULES

For purposes of these Rules, “TI” shall mean Texas Instruments Incorporated and its subsidiaries.

1. To be eligible to compete, each entrant must read and agree to abide by the Contest rules.

2. Each entrant must correctly respond to the hint with a comment on Facebook, a tweet with the #NameThatMaker hashtag on Twitter, or a comment with #NameThatMaker on Google+.

3. Entries must be in English.

4. The Contest begins May 17, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. (CDT) and ends May 19, 2013 at 10:00 p.m. (CDT). No submissions submitted after May 19 at 10:00 p.m. (CDT) will be considered. The award recipients will be contacted before 6:00 p.m. (CDT) on May 20, 2013 and will have until 6:00 p.m. (CDT) on May 24, 2013 to claim their prize by messaging TI his/her address. TI reserves the right to cancel this Contest phase before the end date at its sole discretion, and decline to award prizes if there are no eligible entrants.

5. Only one entry per person is allowed on each TI social media platform for each hint given during the Contest.

PRIZES: Three (3) winners of the first contest each day will receive C2000™ Piccolo LaunchPads valued at $17.05, EK-LM4F120XL Stellaris LM4F120 LaunchPads valued at $12.99, and MSP430 LaunchPad Value Line Development Kits valued at $9.99. Three (3) winners of the second contest each day will receive BeagleBone Black boards valued at $45 USD each. Total approximate value of all prizes: $255.

25. In the event of unavailability of any of the stated prizes, TI reserves the right to substitute items of equal or greater value.

26. If a winner cannot be reached by 6:00 p.m. (CDT) on May 24, 2013, TI reserve the right to deem the prize forfeited.

27. Employees and agents of TI and such individual’s immediate family (including spouse, children, parents, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, step-children, step-parents and in-laws) and members of the same household are prohibited from entering this Contest.

28. THE CONTEST SHALL BE CONSIDERED VOID WHERE, AND TO THE EXTENT, PROHIBITED BY LAW.

29. TI reserves the right to use information regarding contestants for future mailings subject to applicable laws and regulations and privacy policies. TI’s privacy policy can be found at www.ti.com/home_f_privacy.

30. Subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with all Contest rules, one person who correctly responds to each hint will be randomly award a Prize during the contest.

31. No entries will be returned to participants, regardless of whether they are accepted. The winners’ names will be published on TI’s websites and media outlets.

32. If there is a dispute regarding the identity of the entrant, TI reserves the right to deem the account holder of the e-mail address as the entrant.

36. DESIGN West – Day 2: Busiest booth in town

After blogging last night about all the cool demos in our DESIGN West booth, I didn’t realize you would ALL come see us today! I’m not complaining, but my feet may be.

From the time the doors opened at 11:30, which was highlighted by people literally sprinting to our WEBENCH speed training session with Jeff Perry, to the doors closing at 5:30 – it was a busy day.

There were very few open seats at each of the in-booth training sessions and we anticipate even more people attending tomorrow. We didn’t plan it this way, but the trend in the TI booth seems to be flashing LEDs. We’ve got a great ZigBee Light Link (ZLL) demo where we can control the color of the lights via a tablet. One of the media guys who stopped by to see it was amazed – his favorite part was when we took a digital postcard of a sunset and matched each of the light bulbs to a different shade of red, yellow and orange from the postcard. We’ve also got blinking LEDs on our “Tech Cave” coffee table, MSP430 LaunchPad LED Cube, the SafeTI rotary saw demo, not to mention all the flashes from the cameras near the BeagleBone Black pod.

I really encourage you to check out our booth tomorrow. It’ll just take you a few minutes – but you’ll be amazed at all the cool projects that we have on display. This isn’t just about TI demos – we’ve invited several of our partners and hobbyist community members to show off their projects as well.

And just because it’s the last day of the show, we’re not wrapping up early!

TI Live @ DESIGN West 2013

There are usually only 24 hours in a day – but yesterday, there happened to be 26.

A huge team from TI flew from Dallas to San Jose to kick off DESIGN West 2013, and let me tell you – the two hour time change really made a difference. It felt like we pulled a college-style all-nighter to get our booth together in time – but it was well worth it and those extra two hours came in handy!

If you haven’t had a chance to see our booth (#1607) yet – please make a point to stop by. I promise you’ll feel right at home when you see our ‘TI Tech Cave’. It’s decked out with the latest technology like an LED coffee table, home automation system and a throwback Nintendo console to name a few – which has made it the most comfortable place to rest at the show this week.

Another cool technology you’ll have to check out in our ‘Tech Cave’ is the wireless charging station. Just drop your phone on the desk and poke around our booth while it recharges. It’s been a lifesaver for media and customers who have drained their phones while walking around the show floor.

If you’ve conserved your phone battery – you’ll still have a reason to stop by our booth. Snap a photo of the new BeagleBone Black with our Sitara AM335x processor team. It’s been the most talked-about (and desired) product at the show.

A few reminders for tomorrow:

- TI’s “Make the Switch” Tool Swap is still happening. Bring an old competitor tool and we’ll swap it out for a new MCU LaunchPad or Hercules kit.

- In-booth training happens every hour, on the hour. We’ve received great feedback from today’s sessions – so don’t miss out.

The Godfathers of Beagle will be rockin' to the BeagleBone at SXSW

Want to learn how to build your own robot or real-life superhero costume that works? What about a camera that superimposes a mustache on your face? Then, I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse.

Gerald Coley and Jason Kridner - the co-founders (aka Godfathers) of BeagleBone (BEAGLEBN) and BeagleBoard.org - will be at SXSW to lead an interactive workshop about how to build cool hardware using BeagleBone. They will showcase how current developers leverage the open-source platform to create innovative products such as an underwater robot, a 3D printer, BeagleBone mustache camera, a real-life Iron Man suit, sensor-equipped platforms that make your life easier and a camera that spits out descriptions of a moment instead of the image.

They will also provide key insight and tips on how to develop cool hardware using software like Android and Ubuntu and how to take your cool project and transform it into a prototype that can be taken to market.

Infusion Pump controlled by Sitara ARM Processors and Wind River at Embedded World

ARM-based processors such as the Sitara AM3358 are being designed into many applications - including medical devices! An example of this is the infusion pump that is being demoed at Wind River's booth at Embedded World. It's powered by the AM335x running Wind River software which allows for a nice touch-screen interface.

TI is well represented at Embedded Linux Conference 2013 that started today, with 11 presentations from TIers still to come. Today, there are 4 hands-on BeagleBone sessions at 2, 3, 4 and 5.... and at 3PM, Kevin Chalmers is giving a talk regarding how to gain management buy-in to develop against the mainline Linux kernel as an active contributor. Clearly he's had some success at TI given we are now a top contributor to the kernel. Koen Kooi of CircuitCo and an active supporter of the BeagleBoard.org community s just about to give a talk about the history of OpenEmbedded and this morning, Matt Ranostay gave a talk titled BeagleBone: The Perfect Telemetry Platform? that he also gave at ELC-Europe. Check out the rest of the schedule.

I'll be walking around the rest of the week sporting the BeagleStache, but the main thing I'll be talking to developers about here is about getting the best-possible mainline support for the soon to be unveiled next-generation BeagleBone! Blogging LIVE: "Silicon - Gangnam Style" at CES Digital Health Summit

We are excited to give you a taste of some live action here at CES. Dr. Karthik Vansanth, General Manager for Medical and High Reliability Business, is giving the closing keynote : "Silicon - Gangnam Style" at CES Digital Health Summit.

Fun fact is Karthik is a huge Star Wars Fan

"I want to make the connection between Gangnam Style, Silicon and Health today"

We have a mascot today Mr. G and he has a device with sensors that have three main things that they need track:

- Sense

-Compute

- Transmit

They have to be small and function well. Silicon makes that happen. We taking the slow weak signals from the body and amplifying them. We are trying to take all this data and convert them into information we can understand. The sensors don't have to work all the time, so how do we conserve power and get meaningful data from this sensor.

Now we need to take this meaningful data and send it up to the web. The data rates are really low, just numbers not videos or pictures so we can optimize it and really manipulate the data to get what we need

In the beginning we always started with technology in the hospital, but it has now move to the doctor’s office and now everywhere

Create the need:

Technology will make it possible

Killer applications will make it necessary

So where will you take it!

Engineering the Future at CES

Day one was a great start for us at TI. The halls are packed with people looking for a glimpse into the future!

TI and QNX announce their work on the Bentley. Isn't it beautiful?

On another side, HealthTech is making a couple of hearts flutter with excitement. We have DLP powered projectors that show real-time image of a patient's veins on the surface of their skin and monitors that have made it possible for patients be comfortable. Later today we will be live blogging Karthik Vasanth "Silicon - Gangnam Style" at the Digital Health Summit in room N250.
