Site Enhancements: E2E is faster, verified answers are clearer, and it's easier to search

Your humble community team has been hard at work in recent weeks developing and launching new features to improve your E2E experience. After initial tests to find and use that pill from the upcoming movie "Limitless" that lets you use 100% of your brainpower failed miserably, we decided to stick with our natural, inherent abilities. Lo and behold, we still came up with pretty great stuff. As this blog moves forward, we'll most definitely be bringing you any and all new updates as they go live on the site, but for the next few posts, I'd like to catch you up on some of the great things we've launched recently, just in case you missed them.

Verifying Forum Answers

After requests from several TI business segments, we've made some tweaks to the way "verified" answers are displayed on the Community forums.

The old method of displaying conversations and answers displayed any verified answers at the top of the reply chain, with all other messages following after. This caused confusion because those verified answers often didn't make sense in the flow of the rest of the comments. Now, all comments are displayed in the order they were posted, including verified answers, but any answers that have been verified are highlighted to distinguish them in the comment flow. Here's what  it looks like:

If you think that's cool, wait till you see what else we've been doing! Are you excited yet? You better be!

E2E Site Enhancements

Let's be honest. If a web page runs slow, you won't have much interest in navigating to that web page and spending time on it, right? The move away from dial-up was supposed to prevent us from being able to read a full novel whilst waiting for all the content on a website to display properly. We're all busy, we've all got stuff to do. We need our content and we need to be on our way. That's especially true if you're asking questions about engineering products so you can continue your design process. With that in mind, we've made a few improvements aimed at helping out.

  • As measured in Internet Explorer 6, the load time of the main E2E page has been reduced by 50%.
  • The load time of forum pages has been reduced from 17 seconds to 5 seconds (as measured in Jiangsu, China).
  • In China, the load time of a forum thread with a full page of replies has been reduced from 36 seconds to 18 seconds.

Wowza! That's like NASCAR fast...

Search Re-architecture

Making it easy for users to simplify and refine their searches on E2E was the main driver for this project, and some great results have come out of it:

  • The E2E search engine and its algorithms has been upgraded, refined and tweaked
  • The search results page was re-designed to improve both aesthetic and interfacing qualities
  • Users now have the option to choose advanced search options
  • The group level search box has been re-designed
  • New filters have been added to make it easy to find only the results you want to see. For example, see only verified answers, only answers with a response from TIers, etc.
  • Forums now have "Google Custom Site Search" capabilities, giving users an option for searching that perhaps is a bit more comfortable
  • The ability to subscribe to tags has been added
  • Forum subscription management is now possible
