Forum issue - "unread" posts not filtering correctly

This question is not answered

When I select "Unread" for the filter for posts in the Stellaris forums, it filters out all posts.  Earlier it was showing a handful of posts, but after I read them, I was suspicious about the small number of posts that had apparently been made in the last couple of weeks.  If I select anything else for the filter, I can see that there are many posts that are unread mixed in with the read posts.

It seems likely that this issue is affecting others as well.  I had many unread posts in the Stellaris forums going back to mid April, but when I select the "unread" filter when looking at the Stellaris forums, no posts would show.  What I found interesting was that many of the posts that were not being shown when I had the "unread" filter selected also appeared to have unanswered questions in them, as if no-one else was now seeing these posts either.

I don't know if this is related, but I just created a new post "Should linker warning #10247-D really be an error" in the TI C/C++ compiler forum. If I view the TI C/C++ compiler forum the post is displayed:

If I view the Development Tools forum, which is the parent forum of the TI C/C++ Compiler my post is no longer visible (not that the "Link error #10010 for CCS v5" thread in the TI C/C++ Compiler forum is still showing):

If I stay on the Development Tools forum but click the date column, which is theory should change the view to display the oldest post first, rather than the newest post first, then my new thread appears:

This suggests some forum bug where the last post date gets corrupted, which could cause people looking for new posts to miss some posts.

We will look into these issues.  Slandrum, can you please post some screen captures and the steps you are doing to see this?

    Thanks

Here is what I get when I look at the Stellaris forums with "Unread" selected as the filter:

Here is an image from when "All Recent" is selected:

I know the text is too small to read well, but you can get the idea of what I'm seeing.  When I logged in this morning, I think a total of 4 messages showed when I selected "Unread", but there were probably closer to a dozen threads that had unread messages when I clicked on "All Recent"

In a related topic, I posted a message yesterday in the E2E general forum.  When I looked at the Community Feedback collection of forums, my post wasn't visible, but when I looked at the E2E General Discussion Forum it was.  Then I noticed that my post actually was visible in the Community Feedback collection, but that it was out of order according to datestamp.

I think the issue is that when looking at a collection of forums, there's a problem with the merging of the message lists from the separate forums.  This is probably also breaking the filtering mechanisms when looking at the collections.  When looking at an individual forum, this issue doesn't seem to be present.

One difficulty in reading messages in an individual forum, though, is that there's no link to go back to looking just at that forum, but instead there's a link to look at the forum collection that it belongs to.  For instance if I am looking at a message in the E2E General Discussion Forum, there's no link to go back to the list of messages in that forum, but there is a link at the top to go back to the Community Feedback collection of forums.  In fact, once I have a message thread open, I cannot even tell which specific forum the message thread is in.

Here's a screenshot of what I see right now when I got to the last page of the Community Feedback collection:

If you open up the image, you can see the two posts at the bottom (one that I made yesterday) are clearly shown in the wrong place in the list.

Just to refresh this topic, this is still occurring - when I look at the Stellaris forums, the Unread filter doesn't show most of the threads that have unread posts in them.  When I just logged in this morning, I see 7 threads in the Stellaris forums when I select the Unread filter.  When I select All Recent, in the fist couple of pages of threads listed I see 17 threads that are bold, indicating that they have unread posts in them.

In fact, another symptom that's occurring now is that some brand new posts and threads show as already read.  I would never have noticed this in the past, but now that I'm not using the Unread filter at all, I notice this pretty regularly.  So I don't know if this is a new symptom or not.

This all seems to have started with posts around the middle of April.

Thanks for letting us know this is still an issue.  We are looking into this and are trying to find why it works fine for some people and not for others.  To help us can you let us know your browser and version number?  Have you tried different browsers?  Is your browser set up to allow cookies?

My browsers are set up to allow cookies.  I read the forums on two different computers, but with the same login.  I see exaclty the same issues on both.  On one computer (I don't have direct access to at the moment) I'm running FireFox.  I'm not cerfain of the FireFox build, but I can get that to you next week.  On this computer I'm running Google Chrome 19.0.1084.52 m.  I just checked with Internet Explorer verison 9.0.8112.16421 on this computer, and it's also showing exactly the same thing.

Right at this moment, if I am in the E2E Help Central, and select the Community Feedback tab, and have All Recent selected as the filter, I see at the very bottom of the list on the last page, the following thread: SPEED_PR_MACRO usage error.  This thread is out of place, as it was last updated May 14, 2012, but the oldest thread in the community (listed just above it) was last updated Jun 17 2008.

Edit: I just checked the FireFox on the other computer, and it's version 12.0.  This problem seems like it would not be browser related.

Just refreshing to say that this is still occurring.  At the moment I see 12 threads in the Stellaris forums with unread messages in them if I use All Recent as the filter, but only see 5 threads if I use the Unread filter.  I'm also frequently seeing a new thread pop up that's already marked as read before I've looked at it.  I expect this is happening to other people as well, they just don't notice that it's happening and they don't know that with the Unread filter on that there are a lot of threads they aren't seeing at all.

We are aware of the issue.  This will not be a quick fix.  Stay tuned.
