I plan to use the TPA3106 in a multi-channel design. The amplifier IC reference design calls for (2) 220uF capacitors per IC.
If I have 3 ICs in my design, can I combine 3 or 6 capacitors into one or two large value capacitors? What are the pros and cons of this?
Ultimately, I am looking to reduce cost.
Argh, those caps are my arch nemesis... We battle over those all the time internally...
Basically, "it depends."
The main purpose those caps serve is to make sure each chip has good cross-talk perfromance. they supply the energy for audio frequency signals. the ceramic caps are absolutely needed, the chip will have serious issues if you don't do an awesome job laying those out with a tight loop. But, for the electrolytics, I think you can certainly collapse the two to one for each IC, and then maybe even collapse the remaining 3 to a smaller number, but it really depends on how good your layout is, how stiff your supply is, blah, blah, blah...
