TPA3116 FAULTZ question

On the TPA3116 FAULTZ can be linked to SDZ to shutdown on a fault. However, since these 2 pins are linked, is it still save to MUTE the amplifier as it is also connected to FAULTZ ?

It does not seem to say either way in the datasheet, it does list driving MUTE, but it is not connected to FAULTZ. My concern is, as FAULTZ is a output, will it blow the chip if this is also connected to MUTE which can be controlled my a MCU etc ?

Hi Chris,

MUTE is active H and Faultz is active low. So if you tied this two pins together the amp will always be muted when Faultz is H (normal operation). Faultz is open drain which requires a pull up resistor to logic H voltage lever.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reply, both pins are tied together as you state, though what I mean is, can they still also be driven externally without damage to the faultz pin ? As I would like to have both pins tied together, but also be able to operate mute externally.

Hi Chris,

TPA3116D2 has separate MUTE pins and SDz pins to set the PWM output to Hi-Z. For auto-recovery from Fault, you can tied the FAULTz pin and SDz pin together and use MUTE pin to mute the amp externally. I do not see the reason to tie MUTE pin to FAULTz pin. Maybe I am missing something here?

Sorry my bad typos...

I did not mean MUTE it should have read SDZ & FAULTZ, in that , can SDZ still be driven externally while connected to FAULTZ. ?

Yes it should be possible since the FAULTZ is an open collector output and SDZ is an input.
