[ TAS5421 ] "Short to GND" and "Short to PVDD" Protection

Hi,

Can you help me to understand how TAS5421 detect the condition of "Short to GND" and "Short to PVDD" during playing music and protect device? As my understanding, these fault conditions during playing cause over current condition at output stage, then TAS5421 can detect it, make output Hi-Z and run load diagnostics. Correct?

Also, datasheet page 6 describe some specifications for load diagnostics. Can you please explain the difference between "Resistance to detect a short from OUT pin(s) to PVDD or ground" and "Short-circuit detection threshold"?

Thank you for your support in advance.
Regards,
Ken
  • Hello Ken:
TAS5421-Q1 has two fault detection modes.

    1.  During power on - this is load diagnostics.  This is where "resistance to detect a short" is applicable.  The load diagnostics will check for shorts from outputs to GND and PVDD.  If the resistance is >1.5 ohm, the short is not detected.  This is during power on.

    2.  During play mode - you are correct.  When in play mode and if the short to GND or to PVDD occurs, the over current detection circuit (OC) will stop the PWM  switching.  Output is in high-Z and load diagnostics will run.

In short, load diagnostics will automatically run during power on and during OC event.

    Best regards,
