TPA2005D1 running 4ohm - 5W, 77mm speaker

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA2005D1

Hi, I'm getting ready to head into production with the below amplifier and circuit.  It's on a 3.3V logic system and I really like the sound of the 4ohm speaker we have chosen.  8ohms is OK, but I know it's a bit out of spec.  I would like to know if anyone could elaborate to tell me how likely it would be to fail if possible, or how far out of spec I really am?   I suspect I am not driving the amplifier that hard, and it does have a good ground plane heat sink with many vias under the pad.  It does not feel warm to touch, and usually used for sound effects, not really continual music.  I measure around 2.5-3.0 watt draw roughly when playback.

  • Hi, Zach,

The TPA2005D1 is specified to drive a 4-ohm speaker up to a power supply voltage of 4.2V. Running outside of the data sheet limits will reduce the device's reliability. I can't tell you how much, but for the ratings in the d/s, our goal is a ten year life time at full power.
