TAS5421-Q1 consumption

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5421-Q1, BQ28Z610

HI Team,

I am using TAS5421-Q1 in my reference design for eCall. Please find my questions below:

  1. I see consumption of TAS5421-Q1 above 100mW.Schematic is attached( R50 and R51 are 51k, VOUT_U5 is 5V and VOUT_U6 is 9V). I think that TAS5421-Q1 consuming PVDD idle current typ 16mA. Am I correct?
  2. D/S information in Input voltage: Absolute Maximum Ratings is for SCL, SDA, STANDBY pin max 5V. in part of D/S: Recommended Operating Conditions:
    • no limit for logic-level high STANDBY
    • SCL pin input voltage for logic level high max 5.5V
    • SDA pin input voltage for logic level high max 5.5V

  • Lubomir,
I just measured the current draw from a 9 Vdc power supply when the output is not in standby and unmuted. (Play mode, no signal) The current draw is approximately 16mA. This is the same as the datasheet typical value.
The maximum voltage for the /STANDBY, SCL, and SDA are listed in Abolute Max Table section 6.2 of the datasheet. The max value is 5Vdc.
  • Hi Gregg,

    thanks for your answer.

Would you please recommend me operating modes of the audio amplifier which are useful for reference board?

    • Play mode, no signal
    • Stand by and unmuted
    • Stand by and muted

    Or some another configuration?

    Best regards

    Lubomir

  • Hi Lubomir,

    There are three operating modes.

    1. Standby:  In this mode the part is complete shutdown.  Draws about 2uA of current fromo PVDD
    2. Mute:  The part is powered up, but the output is not switching.
    3. Play or unmute:  The part is powered up and the output is switching

The reason for Mute mode is that the transition from Standby to Play and Play to Standby will cause a pop in the speaker.  The Mute mode will allow for a pop free transition from Play to Mute to Standby.  Also the Mute mode can be used to mute the amplifier for any reason without going to full standby.

  • Hi Gregg,

    thank you for your answer.

I will use gas gauge and audio amplifier on the same PCB.

I am not expert on I2C communication so I would like to double check with you  if you see any issue with connection:

    • Pins: SCL, SDA of bq28z610

    • Pins SCL and SDA of TAS5421

    into one net?

    Regards

    Lubomir

  • Lubomir,

For I2C, the devices can share the SDA and SCL lines, as long as the I2C addresses are different.  Please verify that the I2C address of the BQ device is different than the TAS5421-Q1.
