Choose the right amplifier

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3255, TPA3245, PCM5242

I'm planning to make a speaker system, and need the right amplifier ic. The input have to be I2S and the amp is going to power four 8 ohms drivers with 50W max. Should I go with a single ic to power all four drivers or maybe a single one for each channel? Any tips or recs would be great!

  • Hello,
Our highest voltage device today is the TPA3255 which can run 4 speakers in single ended (SE) mode with a singe IC. However, the maximum supply voltage would limit the output power to around 40W in SE mode with an 8ohm load.

My recommendation would be to run A BTL channel for each speaker requiring 2 stereo devices for 4 channels of audio. Our TPA3245 would work well for a high performance system. This device delivers around 70W into 8ohms at 10% THD. Datasheet preview available on the web.

For I2S input, I would recommend paring the amplifier with one of our DACs like the PCM5242. The PCM5242 also has onboard audio processing for equalization and final tuning for optimum sound quality.

    Best Regards,
    Matt
