TPA3118D2: TPA3118D2 Bootstrap capacitors

Part Number: TPA3118D2

Hello team,

The customer would like to change  bootstrap capacitors (4pcs) from 0.22uF to 0.47uF or 1uF.  Although I do not think TI can recomend capacitor change, they would like TI to advise as the following.

1) Does TPA3118 have any issue if the bootstrap capacitors change from 0.22uF to 0.47uF or 1uF?  I think that THD+N performance would be changed. Is it correct? if it is right, anything else?

2) Do you think that changing from 0.22uF to 0.47uF or 1uF causes TPA3118 brake?

If you would like to know why I ask you about Bootstrap capacitors, I will send email in offline.

Your advise would be so aprrecated.

  • Hi Tamazki-san,
I think both 0.22uF and 0.47uF can be used in TPA3118 application, and there is no performance loss. But 1uF capacitor is a little large, and the capacitor probably can't be charged fully during startup, then the voltage on the capacitor is not high enough. Maybe TPA3118 could work with 1uF bootstrap capacitor, but we can't make sure it works normally in any condition because of the above risk.
