TPA3136D2: Several TPA3110D2 / TPA3136D2 on the same board

Part Number: TPA3136D2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3110D2,

Hi,

I need to design a board with 8 audio amplifiers (16ch). I selected TPA3110D2 with standard ferrite bead filter but I did not pass EMI.

I am going to use TPA3136D2 instead of TPA3110D2 and I will use selected Ferrite beads from EVM.

Do you have any tips in how to manage the power supplies of those 8 amps on the same board, specially regarding decoupling capacitors and power inductors ? Also any tips for PCB layers and routing ?

Regards,

Nicolas

  • Hi Nicolas,

There are 8* audio ampIifiers on your board, this could a big challenge on EMI performance. I believe TPA3136D2 has much better EMI performance than TPA3110D2. Here is an app note about the SSM feature on TPA3136D2. http://www.ti.com/lit/an/sloa234/sloa234.pdf

In your audio system, ferrite beads are used in the output filter. Please select those ferrite beads with higer impedance @100MHz, which suppress the interference better. On TPA3136D2 EVM, we used NFZ2MSM301SN10L. http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slou444a/slou444a.pdf You could also try even higher impedance ferrite beads, e.g. 601.

Please place the output filter as close to the device as possible and make the current return loop back to the device output as tight to as possible.

For PVCC decoupling, you could add the following filter to improve the CE result.

To improve RE result, please add the snubbers on the output pins. Actually our EVM is very good example, please follow it as much as possible. Besides, shorter speaker wires also help to improve the EMI performance.

  • Hi Shawn,

Thanks a lot for your answer. I will follow EVM design as much as possible. In your opinion, how should I manage the 8 PVCCL and 8 PVCCR ? The EVM has an inductor for each side L and R. Should I use 2 filters for each TPA3136 ?  And then a main filter ?

I would also be interested in a good part number for SMD 100uF or 220uF to use for power supplies ...

    Thanks again !

  • Hi Nicolas,
If the filter is used for each PVCCL and PVCCR, that will be good but the cost is an issue. I think you can reserve the filter for each PVCCL and PVCCR and both the main filter position on the PCB. In this way, we can have more options during EMI performance tuning. If it works well without some filter, we just set the capacitors in DNP and use 0Ohm resistor for the inductor. As you know, EMI performance is an experimental result, so we need to verify the performance in lab and it's always better to have more tuning options.
