TPA6166A2: Problem with Accessory Detection

Part Number: TPA6166A2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3254

Dear Team,

our customer would like to use the TPA6166A2. On their prototype board they reported following problem:

They connect a cable with 3.5mm TRRS plug which simulates a headset (HPL,HPR,GND,MIC) to the TPA6166A2. If they do not insert the plug fluently then most of the time TPA6166A2 reports a mono headset with HPL on ring 1 as detected accessory. When they change the Short_Z setting (bit 7 of register 0x18) from 4 Ohm to 7 Ohm then the issue is gone. However, it is not clear to us why the issue should be gone by changing that setting. Can you provide me details of the automatic detection process of TPA6166A2?

What we already tried:

  • Reducing the debounce time from 3ms > 20ms
  • Change the FAST bit so that the polling runs @ 300ms vs. the default 2s

Nothing helped.

Please find below the connection to the jack.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Best Regards
Martin

  • Hi Martin,

  • Hi Martin,

Is there any load connected to the plug? You mention it 'simulates' a headset.
What about using an actual headset plug?
This also involves mechanical, perhaps the final position of the plug connectors is somewhat different when inserting fluently.

  • Hello Jose,

thanks a lot for the answer.

Please find below the information about the test setup. The customer we do some tests with an actual headphone.

    Best Regards,
    Martin

  • Hi Martin,

Sorry for leaving this out of sight. Could you update on what is the status of this?
What was the result when testing with an actual headset? Is it working as expected?
