INA230 vs INA231

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA230, INA231

Hi,

I'm currently using INA230 as current/power monitor, however, I'm considering the usage of INA231. Is there any difference between those two parts, except for different packaging, especially on the communication over I2C/SMBus part?

Thanks,

Luke

  • INA230 high-min is 0.7V * Vs, and low is 0.3V*Vs. For Vs = 3.3V, that translates to 0.99V VIL, and 2.31V VIH. Where this is really critical, is determining the voltage you can run I2C/SMBus relative to your Vs supply. For INA231 today, we run with Vs = 3.3V, but with a pullup voltage of 1.8V for I2C. Since that part has VIL of 0.4V and VIH of 1.4V, we can get away with doing that. For INA230, you could not.

  • Hi all,

Just for clarification, Kyle's statements are correct.

INA230 and INA231 have different High-level and Low-level inputs voltages. Please take this in consideration if you desire to exchange INA231 for INA230 in your design.
