DRV421 based clamp type current sensor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV421

Hello Team,

One of my customer would like to evaluate DRV421 for current sensing in an application with 30ARMS AC current (150A max during startup).

Is there a reference design which demonstrates clamp type current sensor using DRV421, so that existing wiring in the system doesn't change.

Basically, they will take existing wire and have a core around it for sensing. Can you suggest a suitable core for this?

Regards,

Mahendra

  • Hi Mahendra,

I will forward this request to Javier. He might be able to provide some recommendations or comments.

  • Mahendra,

Adding a clamp type of magnetic core is something we have not incorporated into a reference design.  The core mechanical properties need to be considered with a clamp.  With a clamp the air gap may not be consistent and core with compensation windings still need to have the inductance required for the DRV421 to be stable. (Greater than 100mH and lower that 2H)  The magnetic gain will also change but should be ok in this application.  To see how the changes in inductance and magnetic gain of the magnetic core effect the system please go to  DRV421 System Parameter Calculator.  I cannot recommend a core with the clamp style as I do not know how it can be designed mechanically.  A Sumida magnetic core was used in a couple of our reference designs but they did not incorporate a clamp style.
