INA219: Low-side sense capable?

Part Number: INA219
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA230, INA220

Hi,

Can someone please explain why is the INA219 listed for high-side monitoring applications only?

I don't see any differences in the key parameters (input range, common mode voltage range, etc) between the INA219 and INA230, yet the INA230 data sheet claims it is capable of low-side sensing whereas the INA219 does not.

I don't need the bus monitoring or power calculation functions.

Thanks,

-Doug

  • Hi Doug,

Thank you for your query on the E2E Forum,

The issue on low-side with the INA219 is that it cannot be used to calculate power when on low-side as the VBUS pin and VIN+ are the same. The INA220 has a separate VBUS pin from VIN+ to allow it to be used on low-side while also able to calculate power consumption.
