OPA differential input protection and range

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA192, OPA171, OPA170, LM324, TS321, LM358, TL061, TL081, TL071, TL031, RC4558

Usually, there is differential input protection inside an OPA, which will limit the differential input voltage amplitude.

OPA192 can sustain a 36V differential input range.

  1. What’s the differential input range of OPA170 and OPA171? Do they also have input protection diodes inside?
  2. OPA192 is kind of expensive, is there any other low cost OPA that can sustain a wide differential input range, say 10V?

Many thanks!

  • Bell,

OPA192 does not have the back-to-back input protection diodes between the input terminals so may take the inputs to opposite rails (up to 40V total) - see below.

However, since OPA171 does have those diodes, you may only pull the input terminals apart up to +/-0.5V - anything more requires limiting the current to less than 10mA or you will damage the input stage.

  • Bell,

If "OPA" can mean op-amps from other prefixes other than OPA series, then these are high voltage op amps with high VID tolerance (and low cost).
