TL084 Short to Ground Duration

The spec states: "Duration of output short circuit" is unlimited, but points to note 5, which states that: "The output maybe shorted to ground or to either supply.  Temperature and/or supply voltages must be limited to ensure that the dissipation rating is not exceeded."

I haven't found a spec for the max current output in the spec to verify I'll be under the power dissipation rating. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Clare,

The output resistance is 200 ohms.
For short to supply, power is about ( [VCC+] - [VCC-] )^2 / 200 ohms, voltage squared divided by internal resistance
For short to mid rail (usually ground), power is about [VCC] ^2 / 200 ohms, voltage squared divided by internal resistance
