OPA454: 100mA output

Guru 20090 points
Part Number: OPA454

Hello,

Can I use OPA454 for 100mA output application?
According to the datasheet specificationn the maximum peak output current is specified as +120mA/-150mA.
However, there is the description of Io as 50mA in the top page of OPA454 datasheet.

Our customer request the opamp of  60V power supply, 100mA output.
I would like to promote OPA454 to the customer if the device can be used as 100mA output.

Best Regards,
Ryuji

  • Hello Ryuji,

The peak current levels listed for the OPA454 are not an output current level that can be held continuously because the power dissipation of the package is limited. A continuous high-current condition would result in a high temperature rise of the IC. Should the silicon die junction temperature (Tj) reache about 160 C, the op amp goes into thermal shutdown to protect itself. Indeed it will provide the peak currents, but the Safe Operating Area (SOA) Fig. 25 curve dictates the maximum power dissipation at a particular Tj. The maximum junction temperature will limit how long the peak current can be held.

If the OPA454 is applied in a manner such that it operation remains within the SOA while providing 100 mA output current, then it would be safe to do so. But in general, the OPA454 datasheet references the 50 mA output current in several places. Therefore, the intention is it is a 50 mA output current op amp.
