LMV339: different costs for the same devices ?

Part Number: LMV339

Hi, I am confused for LMV339 differences in cost for individual marking. For example LMV339M/NOPB costs about 1usd. But for example LMV339IDR costs about 0,3usd. It is three times lower price for the same device. What is the reason ? And why should I buy more expensive device ? Is there any reason for that?

Thank you for you answer

  • Hello Vladislav,

The LMV339M/NOPB is the original LMV339 from National Semiconductor.

The LMV339IDR is the second-source version from TI.

After the National acquisition, TI continues to produce the original National version for those customers that desire, or require, using the National version.

For 95% of the applications, they are identical. But they are two different designs by two different companies (at the time) on two different processes - so there can be differences in the corner cases.

The volumes are higher on the TI version, which allows for high volume production, which lowers costs. That's business 101..

So if cost is an issue, and you do not specifically need the National version, then order the LMV339IDR.

  • Thank you very much for your answer. Is there any list or register, where I can find this type of information about any other TI product ? You know, this issue with acquisitions and therefore diferences in marking has impact on almost every product from TI. It is very impractical to write questions on this forum everytime  I want to use TI´s product.

    Best regards

    Vladislav

  • Hello Vladislav,

The ex-National devices that had duplicate basic part numbers that overlapped an existing TI device receive a "-N" in their generic part number.

The product folders and datasheets are organized by Generic Part Number (GPN).

So for the LMV339, there are two product folders.

If you search for "LMV339", you get two returns:

     LMV339

     LMV339-N

So the "-N" version is the National version, and the non "-N" is the TI version.

There is no resource that shows 'Here is the National version and here is the TI version" in one place, though you can see if there is a -N and non-N listed in the "Parametrics" table in the product folder. Some folders may have an "alternate device" table that may contain the "other" version.

The simple thing to do is search by the base part number, such has "LMV339", and see what is available.
