OPA656 with single supply voltage?

Hello,

I have a design using an OPA656 with +5V and -5V dc supplies. The circuit works well and the output is positive-only pulses. Subsequent op-amps along this chain are all single-supply devices. As I only have the -5V supply for this one IC, I was wondering if it would be possible to remove the -5V supply altogether and just tie the -V pin on the OPA656 to GND. Any thoughts?

Hello David,

The OPA656 minimum supply voltage (V+ - V-) is 8V. So, 5V single supply would not work:

"The OPA656 is intended for operation on ±5V supplies. Single-supply operation is allowed with minimal change from the stated specifications and performance from a single supply of +8V to +12V maximum."

Also, the input CMVR (Common Mode Voltage Range) is 0.5V above V- (=-4.5V), and 1.75V below V+ (=+3.25V), as copied below. So, you must make sure your CM input does not exceed these levels:

If we redo the circuit for a new design I'll look into a single +9V supply as we have that power supply already nearby on the board.

can u pls. suggest equivalent OPAmplifier to opa656 which can work on 5V

Hi Jagan,

There are many single 5V supply devices which match or exceed the slew rate of the OPA656 and Gain Bandwidth product (>500MHz). Example:

Decompensated: LMH6624, LMH6629

Unity Gain Stable: THS4304, THS4271

If you need the replacement to be CMOS / JFET input (for low input bias current):

Unity Gain Stable: OPA355

You can use Selguide to modify your search and find other alternatives.

Dear Mr Hooman,
Thanks for the reply on OPA656. We are using OPA358, with INA122, and the the 1550NM PD and IRLED. WE ARE finding difficulty in using OPA358 CAN U PLS. confirm if OPA355 WHICH u have suggested will solve our problem. can we replace OPA355 WITH OPA358. kindly confirm.

Jagan,
Please be clearer about what issue you are having with the OPA358. This is a released product and is being used by other customers with no issues. Have you tried simulating the circuit in TINA? That should be the first step.
