NE5532 Voltage Follower Temperature

I have a design that utilizes several NE5532 opamps in a simple voltage follower configuration. The amps are intended to buffer a balanced audio signal, and each amplifier is connected to four similar buffers. While the circuit performs well and the current draw appears normal, the parts seem to run quite a bit warmer than I would expect. I am operating them on +/-15V power supply rails (bypassed with 100nF) with each amplifier drawing 7mA per rail. I have measured the temperature of the device case (SO8) at 50deg C. I believe this to be within recommended operating spec but am concerned about long term reliability. Below is the circuit.

Hello Dan,

Each device typically uses 8mA, that is 4mA per amplifier (2 amps per device).

Rough estimate for junction temperature is 8mA * 30V * 97C/W = 23C temperature rise.

Your case measurement is a more accurate method. Psi JT value can be used here, it is 7.4C/W for this device.

TJ = TC + PSI:JT * Pd = 50C + 7.4C/W * 240mW = 52C

That is fine temperature for an integrated circuit.

Ronald,

Thank you for the reply. I have used these parts before, but in this instance the temperature seemed higher. There are quite a few of them on the board. I suppose that could have something to do with it. To the best of your knowledge, are there any published guidelines that recommend PCB layout practices to reduce, or better handle the heat? Once again, it is reliability I am primarily concerned with.
