THS4520: Gain of 1 or less

Part Number: THS4520

Hi,

Can THS4520 be used with a gain of 1 or less?
For example, are there problems when used with -6B?

  • Hello Cafain,

The answer is that it depends.  Many FDA amplifiers are either stable or nearly so at gains of less than 1.  In order to be sure you would need to at least simulate your complete application circuit and to be certain a prototype build would be necessary.

In order to guarantee stability is it possible to add a resistor between the two amplifier input pins.  This leaves the signal gain unaffected, but it will add stability to the circuit.  The down side is one additional component and some additional noise.

I have a reference design that details this with one of our other amplifiers that is not gain of 1 stable, but the same concept works with all amplifiers.
