LMP8350: Draws higher current when hot plugging in power

I usually slowly ramp power from my power supply when powering the LMP8350. Today I just hot attached the leads from the PS onto the LMP8350, and I noticed it draws a couple more milliamps (about 3-4). I can never get back to it using 15mA. It seems to still work, but I'm unsure of the performance now. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Do you think this higher current draw is a sign of something?

Hi Robert,

Are you able to provide a schematic of your circuit? It is possible that the step in voltage is causing the amplifier to oscillate. Also, are you sure you are comparing the exact same voltages?

Even if the amplifier is oscillating, I unplugged it and did a slow ramp of the power supply, testing the function, and everything works, yet it still draws the higher amperage?

Hi Robert,

As long as it is consistent now, the supply current range over temperature is up to 20mA. The value should be the same at 10V regardless of whether you ramp up the voltage or switch it fully on. Possibly the part has heated up since you first observed the supply current.

So otherwise it should be fine to continue using? I'm testing it a day later with the same high current so it can't be temperature related, which leads me to believe in some permanent damage. Could voltage spikes from hot plugging somehow cause a problem?

Hi Robert,

Hot plugging should not cause a problem. If the current is within the datasheet specifications it sounds unlikely that it is damaged and it should be fine to continue using.
