OPA404KU Extreme Temperature

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA4171, OPA404, OPA4172, OPA4141, OPA4140

Hi team,

What degradation can be expected to the specs of OPA404KU if it is operated at -40 deg C?

Is there a recommended physical drop in replacement for the OPA404KU that can operate at -40 deg C?

Is the OPA4171 a good replacement for these temperature ranges?

Thank you,

Trenton Reed

  • Hello Trenton,

The OPA404 is a legacy product that is still supported by TI. The Electrical Specifications indicate operation down to -25 C for the KU packaged device, but likely it would continue to operate at -40 C; however, no assurances about performance can be made. The electrical performance at cold can be best approximated by the OPA404SG specifications.

A better option would be to apply a newer generation device designed to operate and is specified with a minimum temperature of -40 C, or -55 C. The OPA4171 is a well rounded, general purpose amplifier, but it isn't quite as fast as the OPA404. If bandwidth and slew rate aren't critical in the application, the OPA4171 may be a good choice.

If the bandwidth and slew rate are important, then you may want to consider the OPA4140, OPA4141, or the new OPA4172.
