Multi-Cal PGA309 Problem and questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MULTI-CAL-SYSTEM, PGA309

Hello, Ian. I'm a Daekeon Woo from Autonics in Korea.

I have a problem when i calibrate on our products with Multi-Cal.

Now, i calibrate three temperatures(-10℃, 25℃, 80℃) with Master kit and Slave kit. But after calibrating, Many products don't save calibration data. They save only 80℃ data so the output at -10℃, 25℃ is an error. For example, The proper output is 1VDC at -10℃, 25℃ but the real value is 1.070VDC. It happens so frequently. I think it happens because it can't save proper calibration data. I want solve this problem.

When It occurs calibration fail on High Value during calibration, Can i click "Re Current Cal"? I often click this button when caibration fail.

I think when i click the button many times,  It can't save calibration data to products.

I have other questions.

Now, I use Multi-Cal 2.1 version. I received this version last year. Is there its upgrade version? If you have a latest version, i want download it.

Also, i want to know the proper cable length using connectiong between Multi-Cal interface and our products. I think the shoter lengh is better than long cable length. Please let me know as soon as possible^^

Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Daekeon,

    1.            Ian is focused on another issue so I will support you on this.

    2.            Multi-cal Version 2.1 is the latest version of the software.

    3.            The system was design to work with very long cables as this is often required when using a temperature chamber. The cable we provide in the kit is 1.5m.

    4.            I am not familiar with the issue where the system doesn’t save the data. However, if the sensor is not stable (i.e. pressure is not constant, temperature is not constant) the calibration will fail. Also, if the sensor module is damaged it will not calibrate properly. Can you please send me your span and offset values at the three temperatures? I will simulate your conditions in our lab and make sure that the system operates properly.

    5.            Note: I do not use the “re current cal” option so I don’t know how well this option works.   This may be the issue. I will look at this when I get my system set up.

  • I want to attach the Multi-Cal files so i write a new thing.
  • I'll send a link to the latest software on Monday.  I think you already have it though as you said you are using version 2.1.

  • Hello Daekeon,

Please accept my friend request so I can send you link to software.

  • Hello^^
    I accept your friend request.
but i don't know what's software that you will link.
  • Daekeon Woo,

I had Pete Semig send you the latest version of the software because of your comment “I want to attach the Multi-Cal files so i write a new thing.” As I mentioned in previous forum postings version 2.1 is the latest software. I assumed your comment meant that you needed the latest software.

Note: I tested the existing software and did not have any issue programing the EEPROM. I do not, however, use the re-run calibration option. This may be your issue.

    best regards,

  • Yes~ I received the latest software(ver. 2.1). Thank you^^

    Kay, I have two questions.

First, now i use External Temp Sensing by pressure sensor temperature character and i set the "Temp ADC resolution" 11 bits.

I wonder if 15 bits ADC resolution is better than 11 bits on temperature change.

Second, i calibrate 3-points(-10 / 25 / 80 degrees). After finishing calibration, i check the EEPROM data to know calibration data is saving properly.

I can see the -10 degree Temp ADC value at 'T16' and 80 degree Temp ADC value at 'T0'.

but There isn't 25 degree Temp ADC value from T1 to T15. It is same to every calibrated product. After calibration, I check output by changing temperatures and

the output at -10 and 80 degrees is good but at 25 degree, most of output is bad. Some are improper values compared my pressure sensors accuracy spec(0.5%F.S. in case of DC4-20mA current type, the output value must be 3.920mA ~ 4.080mA at Low pressure and 19.920mA ~ 20.080mA at high pressure)

I want know this issue's cause. Please help me to solve the problem.

I will send you EEPROM data and Temp ADC value each of temperatures tomorrow.

Thank you very much for cooperation^^

    Question 1:
First, now i use External Temp Sensing by pressure sensor temperature character and i set the "Temp ADC resolution" 11 bits. I wonder if 15 bits ADC resolution is better than 11 bits on temperature change.

    Answer 1:

The only disadvantage to using high resolution is that it will slow the temperature conversions. In general, temperature changes very slowly, so it doesn’t matter if the temperature conversion are slow. So, for that reason, most people set the resolution of the A/D converter to the maximum value.

    Question 2:

Second, i calibrate 3-points(-10 / 25 / 80 degrees). After finishing calibration, i check the EEPROM data to know calibration data is saving properly.
I can see the -10 degree Temp ADC value at 'T16' and 80 degree Temp ADC value at 'T0'. but There isn't 25 degree Temp ADC value from T1 to T15. It is same to every calibrated product. Answer 2:

    1. You are having this issue with the multi-cal-system. Have you tried calibrating a single sensor module using the PGA309EVM? The EVM and multi-cal use the same calibration methods, but the PGA309evm is much simpler. You should always start with successfully calibrating on the PGA309EVM first.
    2. Also, you should test your hardware and pre-cal configuration using a sensor emulator first. This makes sure that the hardware design is correct and your files are structured properly. Have your tried the sensor emulator?
    3. Please send me your full schematic.
    4. Please send me your sensor output at -10C, 25C, and 80C (in mV/V) for minimum pressure, mid pressure, and maximum pressure.
    5. Please send me your pre-cal files.
    6. Please send me your temperature sensor output voltage at -10C, 25C, and 80C.
    7. With all the information above I can emulate your exact sensor calibration scenario. If there is a problem with your hardware, or your pre-cal file, I will be able to identify the issue.
    8. Note that the software has been tested so something is likely wrong with your configuration.
    9. Another potential problem is that your sensor output values are not stable. If your sensor has hysteresis, if the chamber temperature is not stable, or if the pressure source is not stable you will not get good calibration results.
    10. Important Note: during our last email, I identified that you were exceeding the output swing range. You were trying to output 5V from the PGA309, but you cannot do this. The maximum you can output is 4.9V on a 5V supply.

  • Hello^^

I need the new version 2.1.Could you send me? Thank you!

  • Hello,

    Here's a link to version 2.1: txn.box.com/.../pd584yo9l4k6l8l8rwesmbxfeqon1jw9

Please be advised that I am nearly finished with a new version (2.3) that has a number of improvements. It will be posted to the TI website in the next few weeks.
  • hello,

how can i get the lastest version? I can only find a version www.ti.com/.../sboc401 that published on 2011 August.
  • hello,

can i get the source code of multi-cal-pga309? i want make some changes.

cause whenever the usb link is break i have to cal again from the beginning.it will cost much of time as change temperature and wait temperature stable.

and sometime the pga309 is caled, when EEPROM is faile, after replace i have to recal the pga309.since the data is already exist, would be better if can download the data into the new EEPROM.

  • Hello, Ian.

    I'm Daekeon Woo in Korea.

Is the same version this download link with multi-cal v2.3i that you sent me by E-mail on January this year?

    Or some functions are changed??

  • Hello Mr. Woo,

The versions are the exact same as the ones from January - no functionality has been changed.
