OPA627: As a difference amplifier in PCM1794A based Headphone amp/DAC

Part Number: OPA627
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA1644, BUF634, , PCM1792A, OPA1622, OPA1612, OPA1688

I was interested in using the OPA627 (and maybe a BUF634) as the output stage of my DAC/headphone amp.  I plan on using the OPA1644 as the Trans-impedance amplifier to convert the current  from the PCM1792A DAC to a differential voltage this signal into a single OPA627 (one each for left and right) configured as a difference amplifier with a gain of 1 to convert the signal to a signal ended signal to drive a pair of headphones (50 ohms to 600 ohms).

  • David,
While the OPA627 will certainly work in this application, you might also want to consider the OPA1612, OPA1622, or OPA1688 for the headphone driver. All three have excellent THD+N specs even into 32 ohm loads, and match or exceed the OPA627's THD+N at 600 ohms. The OPA1622 is probably the best suited to this application, but is only avaliable in a VSON package, while the other two are available in SOIC.
