High Power OpAmps needed.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3409, TPS92515

I have a CREE LED which operates from 55 to 72 Volts and its current rating is 1.5 A. I wish to control its brightness using a PWM microcontroller whose output is 12 Volt and 5 A max.

I am looking for an Op Amp which can amplify the PWM signals from 12 Volts to 72 Volts with output current greater than 1.5 A. Please suggest which TI product matches the specifications.

  • Hi Santosh,

TI does not have a power op amp that can meet both the maximum voltage and maximum current requirements. It would seem that you could satisfy this application with a high voltage comparator driving a bipolar, or MOSFET power transistor. Power transistors are available with both high voltage and high current capabilities. This is likely a lower cost option than a specialized power op amp.

If you must use a power op amp consider a deivce from Apex Microtechnology. They have op amps that should be able to meet your application requirements. A Google search should bring up their web site. TI doesn't have any affiliation with Apex Microtechnology and we provide the reference solely to assist our E2E users.

TI has an LED driver team that might have a better solution for you. I'm going to transfer this thread to their Forum

  • Hello Santosh,

I would need more information to be sure, specifically the full input and output voltage range, but given the information so far have you looked at the TPS92515 or the LM3409? So far this is looking like a buck LED driver. But if you can give more information we can investigate further.
