Here is a description of the difference between Q1 devices and catalog devices.

Automotive qualified semiconductors provide an enhanced robustness over consumer grade semiconductors but still are less robust than military or even aerospace/outer space grade semiconductors.

Special attributes for an automotive semiconductor might be:

• guaranteed long term availability for production of some 7 years or even more
• temperature range, e.g. -20 to +75°C (range might be somewhat widened in contrast to consumer sector)
• clock rate range (clock values might be slightly reduced in contrast to consumer sector)
• minimum semiconductor structure size or process
• bonding technology and metrics
• housing (including thermal & electrical connectivity)
  • affects cooling abilities
  • affects material robustness
  • affects connectivity durability
• production measures, e.g.:
  • selection and categorisation
  • extended & more intense testing
  • a burn in stage for artificial degradation (provides improved knowledge about long-term sustainability of devices; intended pre-customer drop out of single units or even whole lots under the aspect of early mortality)
• conformance with specific standards of the application field
