The failure mode of TPIC6B596 with the battery-OUTPUT short condition

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPIC6B596, TLC6C598

I would like to confirm the failure mode of TPIC6B596 with the battery-OUTPUT short condition.

When INPUT is not incertitude (OUTPUT is not "L") and OUTPUT(Anode) shorts GND, TPIC6B596 is broken by the over current. Is this correct?

If it is correct, I have questions.

1. What is the condition of IC after the crash? Is it "Short" or "OPEN"?

2. When it is broken, does the smoking or the ignition occur?

3. After it is broken and the short conditon continues, does the function of IC stop?

Or does the smoking or the ignition occur?

  • Hello Atsushi,

The appropriate Applications Engineer has been assigned to answer your questions. You can expect a follow-up response within a few days.

    Regards,

  • Hi Atsushi,

There is a current limit inside the device. So the device will not be damaged.

  • Dear  Anda-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

i would like to confirm your answer.

I understood it has current limit.

In the case anode shorts GND continuously, is the current limit operating?

And do you have the data of the period from the time at the short (anode and GND) to the current limit?

    Best regards,

  • Dear Anda-san,

    I have an additional question.

How does this IC check the current?  Does it use the temperature?

If it uses the temperature, I think there is the fear of the heat problem (package damege).

Are there any problem in the case anode shorts GND continuously?

    Best regards,

    Atsushi Yamauchi

  • Atsushi-san,

The max current will decrease when the device case temperature increases.

When the anode shorts GND, there will be no current through the channel. There will be an influence on the system level, but for device it should be ok.

By the way, what is your application? TLC6C598 is a similar device which have the thermal shut down function. You can consider about this device.

  • Atsushi-san,

I think I misunderstood your word on" Anode short to GND". Do you mean the mosfet conduct and there is current goes through the mosfet? If so, I think I can do some experiments to figure this out. By the way, what kind of applications do you plan to use this device in? There is no problem to send me email to discuss this in details.
