TPS7A6201-Q1 thermal shutdown

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A6201-Q1

I would like to confirm the thermal shutdown for TPS7A6201-Q1.

The customer tested below conditon. In this case, thermal shutdown did not occur.

Conditon:

Input voltage: 15.19V

Output voltage: 3.40V

Output current: 217.1mA

IC surface temperature: 114.9deg

IC ambient temperature: 98.1deg

I estimate the junction temperature about 175 degreeC.

I have question.

1. Can you guess why thermal shutdown did not occur?

2. Do you have the data of the temperature variation of thermal shutdown?

Best regards,

Atsushi Yamauchi

  • Hi Yamauchi-san,

Yes, your estimation is correct according to the data in the datasheet, and estimated 175degC is higher than the TSD temperature threshold.

But the thermal data in the datasheet is obtained based on the JESD51-5, while in real case the condition would be different. If the PCB is with more vias and layers, thermal performance could be better.

    Best regards,
    Jason
  • Dear Jason-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

Usually, the thermal condition for the actual substrate is worse than JESD51-5, I think.

If we get the information of the substrate, can you check it?

And do you have the data or the information of TSD temperature threshold for minimum and maximum value?

The customer wants to know it.

    Best regards,

    Atsushi Yamauchi

  • Hi Yamauchi-san,

Could you measure the exposed pad temperature? I would suggest estimated the temperature with theta JP, as theta JA would varies a lot with different conditions.

    Best regards,
