Hello,

  I am working on a design using the SN65HVD1050A-Q1.  The datasheet does not say much about the Vref pin on the part, but does show a couple case where it is attached to a cap to ground.  My questions is whether this is necessary, and if so, what the recommended type and value are for the cap.

Thanks!

    elsalvado,

    The Vsplit pin is used to help stabilize the bus and also will filter unwanted high frequency noise. This can be accomplished if the termination using the VSplit pin is as follows:

    The corner frequency of the lowpass filter can be calculated using the following equation:

    ƒc = 1 / (2πRCL)

    For a typical high speed can bus, CL of 4.7nF will generate a low pass filter with a corner frequency (-3dB) at 1.12 Mbps. Also there is an app note titled "Introduction to the Controllwer Area Network" that can be found at the link below.

    Please let me know if you need anything else,

    John
