AFE44xx pulse oximeter frontend & medical certification

hello,

i am currently working on a project utilizing the AFE44xx pulse oximeter front end and i am wondering what is the minimum external circuitry needed to pass medical certifications (besides capacitors/oscillator mentioned in the app-note of course).

I am especially interested in over-current protection through the LED in case the AFE44xx device fails (single fault condition). Do I have to implement active current monitoring on the TX Led supply rail or is that not necessary using this device?

Hello Jogi,

Your ideas seem to be in the right direction. We aren't end equipment experts. Any advice we give you would be incomplete. You might contact companies who focus on passing the various safety and regulatory standards.

Hi Lijoy,

thanks very much for the answer! i will implement it just to make sure.
one thing i could not find in the datasheet: if i cut off the TX Control and TX LED supply without cutting off the RX-part supply (but deactivating it) would that do harm to the AFE400? I know it's not the most elegant way to solve this problem but since I am a bit space constrained I would like to solve it with minimum external component count...

Jogi,

In general, we never recommend one supply to be on and other to be OFF. We do not recommend this.
