AFE5851EVM For TSW1400EVM Got the Error

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE5851EVM, AFE5851, HSMC-ADC-BRIDGE

Hello,

We want to implement our system with AFE5851EVM and TSW1400EVM.
And we try to follow the AFE5851EVM user guides.

But when we use the HSDC Pro to capture test data, it have "read DDR to File TIMED_OUT_ERROR Time Out error" error.

Some differences:

Hardware setup:

In the user guides, it has a bridge adapter between the AFE5851EVM and TSW1400EVM.

We have buy it, but haven't got it yet. So for now our hardware setup is like the second picture.

And the ADC power is 5VDC with 0.5 A.

Ext CLK IN is 40MHz and 13dBm(high 2.825V, low 0V)

My Questions :  1. Is bridge adapter necessary or it just to connect?

                            2. Does the hardware setup have any problem?

Software setup :

In the user guides, ADC5851 need to

init for TSW1400  ->  Select TAB "TGC Register" ->  press "Variable" toggle button ->  enter 30 in the "Coarse Gain(dB)" field, then press "Write" button.

But the AFE5851EVM software in the TI web is like below picture. It does have "init for TSW1400", it just have"init for TSW1250".

So the Software setup is like

init for TSW1250  ->  Select TAB "TGC Register" ->  press "Variable" toggle button ->  enter 30 in the "Coarse Gain(dB)" field, then press "Write" button.

My Questions :

1. Is the AFE5851 software version is right or not?

2. Is that we don't let the ADC to init for TSW1400 so that it have time out error?

p.s

In HSDC Pro setting, just choose AFE5851_12X firmware and set the ADC output data rate to 20MHz, and set the ADC input frequency to 2MHz.

  • Hello Jhin,

We have received your inquiry regarding the AFE5851EVM and TSW1400EVM and have assigned the post to the device apps expert.
He should get back to you soon.
  • Jhin,

    1. The adapter is absolutely required and should have shipped with the AFE5851EVM.  This is a known error, but I am surprised it is not fixed.  Could please tell me roughly when the EVM was ordered? 2015?  We will work on this error and meanwhile we will work to get you an adapter card.  Can you please write an email to us with the best address for shipment.

    2.  This is the most up to date software, with a few non-idealities.  For instance, "init for TSW1250" should now say "Init for TSW1400", but the current version works.

    3. The rest of your set-up looks ok.

    4. Please don't expect a data capture without the adapter card, it is impossible.  For future reference, the "read DDR.." error means that the TSW1400 is not receiving the data correctly, particular the FCLK or LCLK.  When D5 on the TSW 1400 is unlit,  there is an issue with the clock or connection and capture will be unsuccessful.

  • Hello Jhin,

How are you? For your questions of using AFE5851EVM and TSW1400EVM:

    1. Yes, the bridge adapter is necessary.

    2. It is connected between AFE5851EVM and TSW1400EVM and help signals such as data and clocks

    from AFE5851 to TSW1400 FPGA.

    3. the software version still can work with TSW1400 as well.

    4. Please notice: according to the data sheet, the following two registers always are '0'.

Please keep "Invert LVDS output" selection always to be '0's (not used)

Please keep "MSB FIRST" selection always to be '0' (not used)

After you click any selection, then please click "Write" button.

    Thank you!

    Best Regards,

    Chen

  • Hello Praveen,

Thanks for your help and your kindness.
I have fixed the error, and may begin to implement our system or try some tests.

    Best Regards
  • Hello Chuck,

Thanks for your explanation. It is very detailed and helpful to me.

I find that we order two AFE5851EVM in this year. (actually in one or two month)
One have the adapter in the box, but the other doesn't have.
I need more time to check that what is the correct date when we ordered the boards
and that we buy one by one or buy two in one order.

Because I use the board which doesn't have the adapter in the box.
(I found that the other box have the adapter just in this morning)
And the user guides doesn't mention the adapter frequently, so i mistakenly thought it might be ok to just combine the AFE and TSW.
But now i know that adapter is absolutely required.

For now I have one adapter(but two boards), and try with the above setting.
And after test the capture in HSDC Pro is good to work.
    Thanks for your help.

And I have one more question.
Because we don't know the adapter should be shipped with the AFE5851EVM.
When we didn't find the adapter, we ordered other adapter.
    www.ti.com/.../hsmc-adc-bridge

Is the adapter in the link good to work with AFE5851EVM & TSW1400EVM?

    Best Regards
  • Hello Chen, Praveen, and Chuck,

Thanks for your reply and remind.
    I appreciate all you guys.

For now my team fix the error.
Then we will do more things with AFE and TSW.
It might have more questions to ask you.

If you have time to reply me, I would appreciate all your help.
    Thanks again.

    Best Regards
  • Jhin,

The HSMC-ADC-Bridge is not the correct adapter and there is no link for the correct adapter.  If you need a second adapter card, please let us know.  Also,  can you confirm where you order the EVM from please?

    Thanks,

    Chuck

  • Chuck,

Ok.  I will tell and ask the person who ordered the EVM.

    Thanks,

    Jhin

  • Chuck,

I have some questions about AFE5851EVM input signal and the signal after amplifier (in the AFE5851EVM).

In AFE5851EVM data sheet (Rev B), It says the analog input to AVSS is -0.3V to 3.6V.(in page 4)
And the user guides and data sheet says the 16 single-ended buffered inputs with 1Vpp maximum swing.(in page 1)

So I want to know the input signal is in the range -0.3V to 3.6V or have to be limited in 1Vpp ?

    Another question is,
In the data sheet it says the signal after VGA(-5db to 31db gain) limited to 2 Vpp.
So does it means that the signal from VGA to ADC would be limited to 2 Vpp or a range?

    Summary, My questions are:

    1. What is the analog input signal limited, and the range?

    2. What is the VGA working range, and the input, output limited?

    3. Also what is the ADC 1~16 working range and the limited?

  • The input range is limited to 1Vpp, but 3.6V will not break the device.

The ADC input limit is 2Vpp.

    Chuck

  • Hi Jhin,

    For your questions about AFE5851:
The following limitations are listed for the device linear performance :
    1. What is the analog input signal limited, and the range?
Analog input (single-ended) range to AFE5851 input buffer is 1Vpp MAX.
    2. What is the VGA working range, and the input, output limited?
The VGA gain range can be set from -5dB to 31dB range.
Its input (single-ended) is 1Vpp MAX.
Its output (differential) is 2Vpp MAX.
    3. Also what is the ADC 1~16 working range and the limited?
The on-chip ADC (each ADC is shared between 2 VGAs) input (differential) is
from VGA/AAF output (differential) so its input range is 2Vpp MAX.

    Thanks and best regards,
    Chen
  • Is that means our input data should be in 0V~1V, or 1Vpp in the -0.3V~3.6V range?

And I get some problems in capture.
After I connect the adapter between the AFE & TSW, and follow the user guides.
I got the waveform like this.

    Input signal (0V~70mV, 1.99981MHz)  & the ADC 5851 software fixed gain 30dB

    CLK (40MHz and 13dBm(high 2.825V, low 0V)

The 70mV signal in oscilloscope have not much noise like above picture.

Then I try higher voltage input signal.

    Input signal (0V~1V, 1.99981MHz)  & the ADC 5851 software fixed gain 0dB

    CLK (40MHz and 13dBm(high 2.825V, low 0V)

And change the frequency of input signal.

    Input signal (0V~900mV, 998.229kHz)  & the ADC 5851 software fixed gain 0dB

    CLK (40MHz and 13dBm(high 2.825V, low 0V)

    Input signal (0V~900mV, 100.013kHz)  & the ADC 5851 software fixed gain 0dB

    CLK (40MHz and 13dBm(high 2.825V, low 0V)

What is the reason to let the difference between oscilloscope waveform and HSDC Pro capture?

Is that some setting I haven't done?

    Please help.

Or give me a email address.
I would send you the AFE5851EVM order information.
  • Hi Jhin,

    How are you?

Could you please double check if the Adapter you received has the following printed name on the board.

    "TEXAS INSTRUMENTS"

    "AFE58XX-TSW1200"

    ?

    Please confirm this for us.

    Thank you!

    Best regards,

    Chen

  • Hi Jhin,

How are you? We tried to duplicate the same test setup as you did.

Input signal (0V~70mV, 1.99981MHz) and we assume and set up 2 different register conditions

    as follows:

    1) Please notice: "MSB_FIRST" register is Not used anymore according to Data Sheet.

but If in this case, "MSB_FIRST" is '1':

        You can see:

    2) Please make sure "MSB_FIRST" must be '0' (due to Not used):

        Please do the following step:

Please try to run the same register conditions as mentioned above. You can see the correct data output from TSW1400 GUI.

    Thank you,

    Best regards,

    Chen
