CD4011B-MIL: Input voltage - can it exceed Vcc by .5V?

Part Number: CD4011B-MIL
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CD4011B

Hi,

I understand that per the spec, the inputs to CD4011B shouldn’t exceed Vcc by more than 0.5 V. What if it does? We have a current limiting resistor on the input to limit current to <100 uA (spec is 20 mA or something like that I believe). Are we ok by adding that resistor? Is there something we’re missing?

Thanks,

David

  • David,

This is a very old device that was acquired from Harris.

They have data in the absolute max section showing the following:

Our datasheets specify more clearly with an IIK input clamp current specification for cases where input is above VCC or below GND.

However, the line highlighted above is representing the same value.  It indicates the amount of current that the input can tolerate without exceeding the absolute max spec.  Thus, if they limit the current to less than +/- 10 mA, then they can exceed the input voltage range.

    Regards,
