ADS52J90EVM: ADS52J90EVM evaluation - missing "HMC-DAQ GUI"

Part Number: ADS52J90EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS52J90, , LMK04826

I am currently attempting an evaluation of the ADS52J90 using an ADS52J90EVM and a TSW1400.

I am following the user guide in "SLAU632A–October 2015–Revised June 2016". When I get to step 2, page 12. The firmware appears to download fine but the i get a message "Specified Device GUI path in the INI doesn't exist. Kindly double check it."

The GUI does not then load.

I have double checked I am installing the latest version of the "High Speed Data Converter Pro Software". I note when I look at the ini file it tries to call a "..\HMC-DAQ GUI". Looking in the "High Speed Data Converter Pro\Device GUIs" folder there is nothing in there....could this be a clue?

I am running on Windows 10 if this helps.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

  • Update:

    I have since found a version (2.8) of "HMC-DAQ GUI" online and installing this gets me passed the "INI doesn't exist" error. The GUI does not look the same as depicted in SLAU632A (its at least missing the "DEMOD PRESETS" drop down box. My TSW1400 DDR does not seem to be initializing and I am concerned it is because i am driveing this from an older GUI. Can anyone confirm?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Lawrence,

    I am sorry to hear that you're having trouble using the GUI.

    Please uninstall both current HMC-DAQ and HSDC Pro GUIs you currently have on your system and install the two versions on the device landing page here.

    Also ignore the prompt to update the HSDC Pro version to the latest one for now. I just tried the linked versions on a Windows 7 PC and they work with the EVM okay.

    Let me know if you are still having issues.

    Sincerely,

    Olu

  • Hi Olu,

    Thanks for your input. I have now updated to the versions you advised and am still having some issues.

    The USER_LEDS are lit up as follows on the TSW1400EVM:
    USER_LED0 = ON
    USER_LED1 = ON
    USER_LED2 = ON
    USER_LED3 = OFF/ON
    USER_LED4 = OFF
    USER_LED5 = OFF
    USER_LED6 = ON
    USER_LED7 = ON

    My understanding of the user LEDs tells me that:

    USER_LED4 being off is okay as this is a PLL lock signal from a DAC card which I am not using.

    USER_LED3 was on yesterday but with the new software possibly is off when I drive a 50M clock into J75 of the ADS52J90 EVM. If I turn off that clock the LED comes on??? I am questioning the ability of the signal generator I am using to drive the LMK04826 circuitry. If I was to use the on board ADS52J90 EVM 100M oscillator by fitting JP4 how would I go about telling the LMK to use the OSCIN as a clock source rather than CLKIN ?

    USER_LED5 I have never seen this light up. At what point is it supposed to light? I have tried re-seating the DDR module with no luck.

    Thanks

    Lawrence
  • Hi Lawrence,

    Does the GUI now load or has there been no change in behavior after installing the recommended GUIs?
    The TSW1400 user guide goes into detail about the different LEDs.

    Can you please try using a Windows 7 PC for your evaluation instead of a Windows 10 and see if there is any change in behavior?

    Sincerely,
    Olu
  • Hi Olu,

    My GUI was coming up as of the update I posted on the 15th June. The GUI was coming up (if a bit slowly) and looked a bit different than the guide.

    I have now moved to a windows 7 PC.  Things start up a bit quicker but other than that I am still seeing the same issues. USER_LED4 and USER_LED5 are are not illuminating which tells me that the DDR memory is still not initializing.

    Thanks,

    Lawrence

  • I would like to further note that I have tested the DDR memory from the TSW1400 in a laptop and it seems fine. If I place another known-good DDR memory in the TSW1400 it does not work (I still get no USER_LED5 lighting).
  • I also note that when the "Read DDR to file TIMED_OUT_ERROR" pops up; it suggests to check "Clock from ADC EVM is not received by TSW Board". Probing FPGA_CLKP/M TP21 and TP22 on the ADS52J90EVM I see no clock. Also I have never seen any of the ADS D1, D2, D3 or D$ light - should I? I believe the clock I am feeding to the ADS is OK as I can see a clock out on CLKP/M TP8 & TP10, which follows the frequency.
  • Hi Lawrence,

    That error usually comes up when the TSW1400 is not receiving FCLK. Also LED D5 comes on when the TSW1400 sees FCLK.
    Please verify JP7 has pins 1 and 2 connected and that there is a 50MHz clock signal of ~2Vpk-pk applied to J75.

    If it you re still getting that error then check for both DCLK and FCLK on Pins 58 and 66 of J44.
    Let me know your findings.

    Sincerely,
    Olu
  • Hi Olu,

    I can confirm I am feeding J75 with 2V p-p @ 50MHz.

    I see both DCLK and FCLK on ADS J44.

    Please see the attached images, the yellow in both cases is TP8(ADS). The green FCLK / DCLK:

    DCLK:

    FCLK:

  • Hi Lawrence,

    Your oscilloscope captures indicate that the ADS52J90EVM is working as expected.

    Since LED D5 never comes on even with the ADS52J90EVM providing FCLK and DCLK, it is possible you received a defective TSW1400EVM.

    Please contact your TI sales rep and/or distributor where you purchased the TSW1400 to get a replacement board.

    Sincerely,

    Olu

  • Hi Lawrence,

    While you are waiting on a replacement board, can you also make sure that you have an independent power supply powering the TSW1400 that can provide at least 2A to the EVM?

    Sincerely,

    Olu
