Inquiry regarding phase shift setting on DRV8834 Win APP

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8834, DRV8834EVM, MSP430F2617

Hello, all

Now we have one inquiry regarding phase shift setting on DRV8834 Win APP from our customer.

Please refer to the item below, and feedback us with your comment.

We are evaluating DRV8834EVM with DRV8834 Win APP.

However,  we could not find any setting to have phase shift on either of Dual H Bridge Control, Internal Microstepper Control or External Microstepper Control tabs.

Please let us clarify how we could have phase shift on these above tabs individually.

We thank you in advance for your information.

Best regards,

  • Hi Okui-san,

Would you please clarify "phase shift"? What does this mean?

Depending on the mode selected, the Win APP controls the inputs using the modes described in the datasheet. The PHASE inputs are used in "Dual H Bridge Control" and "External Microstepper Control" The PHASE inputs can be monitored at TP12 and TP21 for proper operation.

  • Duncan-san,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

With regard to the detail on this inquiry, I could get some additional information.

Please refer to the items below, and feedback us with your comment.

    1) Could you let us know the method how to set input configurations on NENBL/AENBL, STEP/BENBL, M1, CONFIG, VREFO, ADECAY, NSLEEP and BDECAY, in case inputting APHASE, BPHASE, AVREF and BVREF, and outputting A Current and B Current, which configuration is shown on Figure 12?

    2) Could you let us know the method of setting configuration, in case shifting 90 degree between APHASE and BPHASE, and between AVREF and BVREF individually, on DRV8834 Win APP?

We thank you once again for your information.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Okui-san,

    1) In the datasheet above Figure 11, there is a link to application note http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slva416. This provides details on creating high-resolution microstepping using xPHASE/xENBL and AVREF/BVREF

    2) For correct external indexer operation, the Win APP requires the "EXTERNAL INDEXER" switch settings in Table 2 of the DRV8834EVM User's Guide (Page 8). When selected in the Win APP, the MSP430 will set the CONFIG pin to phase/enable mode. The MSP430 will then control the xPHASE/xENBL pins to produce the desired current waveform.

Also, please note the EVM firmware is provided on the DRV8834EVM page. Scroll down to Related Products. At this time, the zip file is named "Board Files and Software:DRV8834 (Rev C)". In the Board Files folder, the DRV8834EVM_MSP430F2617_Firmware is available.

  • Hi Rick,

Is there a C program for the MSP430F2617 that I can look at? You have some cool features like accelerating the motor and I'd like to see how you did it.

    Thanks.

    Nick D.

  • Hi Nick,

There is a C++ program. You can find it under the Hardware Files of the DRV8834EVM.

The link to the folder is  LINK

Scroll down to Hardware: DRV8834EVM. Unzip and look for zipped file DRV8834EVM_MSP4302617_Firmware_AMD_TI.zip
