DRV8818 Thermal shutdown function

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8818

Hi

My customer is using DRV8818.
He requests the following information of Thermal shutdown function.
Please advice me.

1. Why is the thermal shutdown temperature larger than the absolute maximum operating junction temperature value(Min:150, Typ:160, Max 170)?
-> I think that it is because the method of realizing the thermal shutdown function has an error.
so, minimum value is 150 degree.

2. How to return normal mode after thermal shutdown operating?
->Does it return automatically by being under 150 degree?
or the reset of DRV is needed?

Best regards
Shimizu.

  • Shimizu-san,

    1. The thermal shutdown temperature is slightly higher than the Absolute Max rating, so that it doesn't interfere with normal device operation.  Thermal shutdown is there for protection, and it shouldn't limit the usable range of device operation.  Usually a device shouldn't be damaged if it reaches 160C for a short moment.

    2. Yes, no reset is required.  On datasheet Page 12 it states: "If the die temperature exceeds safe limits, all drivers in the device are shut down and the indexer is reset to the home state. Once the die temperature has fallen to a safe level operation resumes."  There will be some hysteresis near the temperature threshold; maybe about 15C.

     Thank you for your support.

     I understood.
