DRV10983 Max commutation frequency?

Hi,

I have an application with a brushless motor with a commutation frequency of around 1400-1500Hz.
On the DRV10983 datasheet, the maximum "electrical frequency" is specified at 1000Hz.

Is this the actual max commutation frequency, or can I expect to reach frequencies of 1400-1500Hz.

For my application, space if vital, and it's important to keep size minimal.

For reference, the 1000Hz is found in Table 9 of the datasheet. It is not very clear.

Yes, 1000Hz is maximum frequency for DRV10983 application. Beyond this its device performance is not gaurrented.

Are there any other solutions of reasonable size that work for up to around 2000Hz?

Brian,

You may choose MCU + Integrated 3-phase driver based solution such as TMS320F28035+DRV8312 kit. Sinusoidal + Trap control software is supported via control-suite, though you have to fine tune is for running it at 2000Hz.

Also, you may look DRV11873 if application is within 12V range.
It is enhanced trap solution with 150 degree commutation.Best RegardsMilan

Hi Milan,

My application uses a 3s lipo battery (11.1v nominal) so it should be fine.

However, according to this, the commutation frequency of the DRV11873 can't exceed 950Hz.

So is there even a remote possibility that the DRV10983 will work with a 1500Hz commutation frequency?

Brian,

Just for clarification, DRV10983 provides sinuoidal modulation and maximum modulation frequency is 1000Hz only, it can not work at 1500Hz.

But if you are refering to 6 step commutation, as happens with trap control 1500/6 = 250Hz, for sure it can work.

Hi Milan,

Sorry for not providing enough detail. My motor has 16 poles, and goes up to around 11000 rpm under full load or 183 rotations/s. 183 x 16/2 = 1464Hz.
I wish to reach this maximum speed.

I'm curious, I have the EVM and read through the tuning guide and set up a 8-pole motor part way (got it to open loop), is the table 9 "Operating closed loop speed" rotations per second or as Brian stated, rotations times poles per second? I really doubt it's the latter, since motor "speed" is typically measured in rotations, but the terminology in the datasheet is unclear.

Terminology in data-sheet refer to electric frequency in Hz or roatation per sec. Electric frequency is Pole numer/2* Mechanical Freqeuncy in Hz or Rotation per sec.

LAUNCHXL-F28027F + BOOSTXL-DRV8301 will run this motor, but it's a significantly more complex control system (and takes much more SW effort) than the DRV1x solutions you are evaluating.

Thanks for clarification Milan.
The DRV8301 seems interesting and I've seen several controllers based off it (in one case a motor controller for a solar powered car). However, size becomes an issue once I add a microcontroller with FETs alongside the DRV8301.

As Chris suggested, you will have to go with MCU based solution for these requirments.

If DRV8301 seems bigger, you may choose TMS320F28027 + DRV8312 Insta-spin solution. After succesfull evalutation, you may choose DRV8313 for better cost optimization.

In-fact Chris suggestion of booster-pack with DRV8301 is also good starting point for initial proof of concept, it can alwyas replaced by DRV8312/8313 by just changing the PWM interface later on.
