DRV8301-HC-C2

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORWARE, CONTROLSUITE, DRV8301, INSTASPIN-BLDC, TMS320F28069, TMDSCNCD28069MISO, TMS320F28035, TMDSCNCD28035ISO, DRV8301-69M-KIT

Purchased the kit called DRV8301-HC-C2 from Mouser - maybe old stock!

I have spent lots of hours trying to figure out what I am doing wrong since I can not get this to work.  Have printed lost of instructions, read a lot of the community questions.  Between Wrong Software to Java errors to USB ports issues - no wonder there are a million questions in the "community". Software included with the kit was for DRV8312-C2 and Codecompser 4.2.xx - TI promotes these kits to be more or less plug and play - really???

I have Coreless BLDC motor that runs "fine" with cheap HobbyKing control boards.

This is the TI controller I received form Mouser :

DRV8301-HC-EVM Rev D  Serial number: D1A  1307017

Control card: CC2803X Rev 1.3  Serial number: D1B 1308069

PLEASE tell me exactly which software/versions/instructions that I need to get/download to get this kit to operate my BLDC motor!

InstaSpin version?
Can I run InstaSpin-MOTION with this controller? (Confused since I can not find references to this card - 2803X in the ControlSUITEuit 3.1??)
Code composer?

Motorware?

  • Hi Leif

Sorry to cause your confusing on the running the kit. From my experience, the key to play with the kits quickly is to make sure the GUI version matching with the firmware version. I checked my controlSUITE installation that the lastest version of both the GUI and firmware is V107 in the following folder. You can refer to the following link when you installed controlSUITE.
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_USB_V107\v107

Then, in the GUI folder: C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_USB_V107\v107\GUI
You can find "InstaSPIN-BLDC_GUI_DRV83xx_v104.exe" and "InstaSPIN-BLDC_GUI_DRV8301_v104.out".

If you have no idea what fireware version inside the control card, please use CCS 5 to reflash the control card with the .out file in above folder.
Then, you can run with the kit and the GUI listed above matching each other.

If you got any requestion further after running the kit, you can post to C2000 forum to get answer about the control algorithms.

    Best regards,
  • Hi Leif,

To run InstaSpin-MOTION  with kit, you should have Insta-spin foc enabled control card. Since you have bought the kit, you can just get another card TMS320F28069 MCU.

  • OK - Great !
You (TI) does a fantastic job on designing this stuff and can not take the simple step to list out the true differences between the three similar products - pretty much the same description on the three boards in this category. Instead of pointing out the differences - all you more or less mention are the similarities on the products on your webpage and brochures.
    1. Thank you for having the wrong software with the kit I purchased.
    2. Thank you for telling me that I now should spend another $100 om a board instead of having a chance (through your web info) to get the right thing in the first place.

    3. TMDSCNCD28069MISO - IS THIS THE RIGHT PART NUMBER FOR THE CARD TO MAKE INSTAMOTION WORK with the board 8301 board that I have?

    4. In your response you say that I need an - "Insta-spin foc enabled control card". Are you suggesting that the control card that I got with the kit - CC2803X Rev 1.3 Serial number: D1B 1308069 - DOES NOT run the the Insta-Spin foc at all? (Not sure about anything anymore..........)
  • Leif,

Sorry that you got confused, but DRV8301-HC-C2 kit mostly shipped with TMS320F28035 control card. If you have this control card, it won't run Insta-spin FOC. Insta-spin foc is aviable only in 3 types of control card, TMDSCNCD28069MISO, TMDSCNCD28054MISO, TMDSCNCD28027F + Emulator.

I would suggest to go with TMDSCNCD28069MISO.

  • OK

From what part of below statement copied from the text from the TI website about this control card should I have drawn the conclusion that I could not use InstaSpin?

The DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT is a motor control evaluation kit for spinning three phase brushless DC and brushless AC (BLAC) - often referred to as permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM) – motors with examples of both sensorless Field Oriented / Vector Control (FOC) and TI’s InstaSPIN-BLDC sensorless BLDC solution. The DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT is a high-performance, power-efficient, cost-effective platform that speeds development for quicker time to market.

.....in particular since I already asked specifically which evaluation board to use.........................

  • The DRV8301 three phase inverter EVM is used in several different "kittings" with different controlCARDS. It is the controlCARD and the associated firmware which determines which control techniques are demonstrated.

For DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT (which uses TMDSCNCD28035ISO) a sensorless (SMO) FOC and InstaSPIN-BLDC are demonstrated. The files for this are in controlSUITE at
    C:\ti\controlSUITE\development_kits\DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT_v105

For DRV8301-69M-KIT (which uses TMDSCNCD28069MISO) it is supported by MotorWare and demonstrates sensorless FOC (InstaSPIN-FOC and InstaSPIN-MOTION) for torque or velocity as well as sensored (encoder) FOC for velocity or position (InstaSPIN-MOTION).

"From what part of below statement copied from the text from the TI website about this control card should I have drawn the conclusion that I could not use InstaSpin?"

Because neither InstaSPIN-MOTION nor InstaSPIN-FOC are mentioned in the description? It will run InstaSPIN-BLDC

The InstaSPIN solutions are discussed on www.ti.com/InstaSPIN
  • Hi, im also bought a new DRV8301-HC comes with TMDSCNCD28069MISO. I already run my motor with that kit by using Insta FOC and Insta MOTION, but when im try to use Insta BLDC, i cant install control suite software. Already downloaded the latest version from ti website and also do web installer, But both come with error messages. From my observation, correct if im wrong..For insta FOC and MOTION, we cant study the characteristics of the motor right because the speed is of the motor is constant. For my project, i want to study the characteristics of torque and speed when load is apply. So i want to ask the experts here:
1.Where can i download Insta BLDC.
    2. It is compulsory to download control suite to run the Insta BLDC or you can suggest me any other option..

    Thank yo so much
    suhairi
    (Start using this kit yesterday)
  • suhairi,

I think, you can very well study motor characteristics using Insta-spin FOC, you can run FOC in constant torque mode and characterize motor speed with respect to applied load torque. In fact I would suggest it would be better than trap algorithm used in Insta-spin BLDC.

If you still want to pursue, Insta BLDC, it is available via control-suite,so you must install control-suite. I'm not sure about error you are facing, you can post the query to C2000 forum to get the right answer.

    Questions of DRV10983

  • "For insta FOC and MOTION, we cant study the characteristics of the motor right because the speed is of the motor is constant."

Not sure what you mean. InstaSPIN-FOC lets you control torque or speed w/o use of rotor sensors. InstaSPIN-MOTION lets you control speed (w/o use of rotor sensors) or speed / position with use of encoder.

InstaSPIN-BLDC lets you control the commutation event for a 6-step square wave modulation. You can then also add a torque and/or speed loop.

InstaSPIN-BLDC projects for DRV8301 EVM are in controlSUITE.
    Yes, you must download controlSUITE.
  • Hello Leif,

I found the overview here to be quite helpful:
    www.ti.com/.../tools_software.shtml

Good Luck and maybe you will share your success and how you did it, too?

  • Hello Milan, I have a similar question to Leif that I believe you answered here but I need to clarify something. If I purchase a DRV8301-HC-C2-KIT that comes with an F28035, can I still purchase an F28069M control card and place it in the 100pin DIMM slot instead of the card that comes with the board? We need access to FOC and MOTION for our project and the only thing this evaluation board is missing is that particular software.

    Cheers,
    Jim
