Asking fot tht DRV8818 stop current waveform comment

Hi Team,

The customer application try to stop the step motor without deceleration.  Customer stop the step signal suddenly and get the current waveform as attached file.   The end of current had bounce-like waveform.

Does this waveform mean any risk for this application?

Thanks,

  • Hi Scott,

The biggest risk is loss of position. Stepper motors are open loop systems, and stopping without decelerating can create conditions where the motor position is unknown for the next move.

Motor manufacturers usually provide specifications that state the maximum starting and stopping speed to avoid loss of position.

If loss of motor position can be tolerated, the motor current shown above can be tolerated.
