DRV8837: Parallel Motor Connected

Part Number: DRV8837
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8823, DRV8871, DRV8870, DRV8832, DRV8844,

Hi

I am currently using DRV8837 to drive one motor. Is there any cost effective solutions to drive four motors. But all the four motor need not be driven at same time ?

1.Is there any way to connect only one Motor Driver IC to drive all four motors parallel.

2.  I have limited no of IO to drive Motor Drive IC.

Regards

Pavaman. P

  • Hi Pavaman,

What are your voltage and current requirements?
Do the motors operate in both directions?
Are there any additional requirements when operating the motor such as current regulation?
  • Voltage Vm is of order 5-30V. Motor Current consumption is of 750mA at 9V. The motor coil DCR is of 12ohms.

Yes, motor operates on both direction. In the existing DRV8837 the current regulation is not happening. We can also use the same feature if available.
  • Hi Pavaman,

The VM range limits available options. There is no one device that covers both the low voltage and high voltage range.

Two DRV8848s operating from 4V to 18V is an option. If you need 30V, the DRV8823 operates from 8V to 32V.
    Four DRV8870, DRV8871, or DRV8871 also operate from 6.5V to 45V.
  • Hi Duncan

Is the below circuit recommended for parallel driving the coil.

I cant use multiple motor drivers circuit as the board real estate is less. So can you have any other recommended solutions.

    Thanks

    Pavaman. P

  • Hi Pavaman,

Sorry, I am confused about the diagram and prior discussion.

The max voltage of the DRV8832 is 6.8V, but you said VM could be as high as 30V.
As shown, the motors will only run in one direction. The original request was both directions.
What are the switches (relays or transistors)?

    What are the current requirements.
  • Hi Rick Duncan

Sorry , the intention is to lower the DRV8837 component from 3 numbers. We need to drive 3 motors but require less DRV8837 to be used. The coil inductance is 1mH. Is there any motor driver device which

    can suffice the requirement.

i am attaching the image for reference :

  • Hi Pavaman,

Thanks for the clarification. From a functionality point of view, it appears you are looking for 4 half bridges with independent control. The options are limited.

The DRV8844 can achieve this, but the size of this device may not meet your requirements. Minimum operating voltage is 8V, max is 60V.
Total package area of three DRV8837 configured as shown in your image is smaller than the DRV8844. Max operating voltage is 11V.

The DRV8837C may also work. The DRV8837C uses the same package as the DRV8837, but has higher Rdson.
