DRV8840: What is the diffence between DRV8840 and DRV8829?

Part Number: DRV8840
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8829,

To me the datasheets for DRV8840 and DRV8829 are identical. One is for step motor applications and the other for DC motor applications, but both datasheets mentioning that they can do both applications. All input signals are the same and all specifications are the same. Only the absolute maximum rating for VM differ slightly. However most of the figures in the datasheets are difference, so it is not just a copy-paste.

  • Hi Ulrik,

The most significant difference is the bridge control. See table 2 in the DRV8829 and table 1 in the DRV8840.

The DRV8829 has three modes (forward, reverse, and coast) while the DRV8840 has a fourth mode available (forward, reverse, and coast or brake depending on the decay setting).
