Hi,

I have questions about ESD protection circuit on motor drive pin.
Could you answer me the following questions, please?

Customer situation is below.
VM = 12V
I full scale = 0.4A
Using chip varistors = AVR-M2012C220KT6AB

Q1: Customer wants to use chip varistors on DRV8812 drive line.
Can we use the chip varistors on DRV8812 drive line for ESD protection?

Q2: How do we usually protect the motor drive pins for ESD?

Hi Shimizu,

If your customer would like to use external varistors for external ESD protection this is not an issue, however our device is protected internally for the ESD specifications we have in table 6.2 on page 5 of the DRV8812 datasheet.

For most applications, this is enough ESD protection on the motor drive pin. If your customer would like to use these for their application that should not be a problem.

Hi Shimizu,

Phil is correct. This device is protected against HBM and CDM ESD events during the manufacturing process.

If you meant IEC 61000-4-2 compliance, external circuits such as varistors or TVS may be required to protect the device.
