Motor Controller recommendation for high current applications

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8332, DRV8323R, DRV8323

Hello Team,

I am working with a customer who is looking for a control solution for his project. This is a motor controller/ braking unit.  This can be up to 24V and 320Amps.  and would like to be able to adjustable voltage.

The system will act similar to a BLDC.  In this setup the customer will be using Eddy current braking units, so with those they are aiming to vary the voltage which will linearly vary the current to the coils. If they can adjust the voltage from 1-24VDC with high current capability, that should work.

Do we have any device that can handle the high current that they will see ?

Thank you for you time.

Regards,

Kishen

  • Hello Kishen,

We do not have a device that can handle large currents like that directly. However, if the customer can select their own FETs, we have BLDC gate drivers that can drive the FETs. TI's NexFET portfolio has some good potential options for FETs that can handle that much current. Once the customer selects their FETs, we can recommend a device based on what drive current they need.

You said this would be used for braking. The DRV32xx devices are meant for automotive safety applications. Would these work for your customer?

Otherwise we can find a device in our catalog BLDC gate driver portfolio.

  • Hello James,

    Thank you for your response.

You mentioned Potential FET's with a high current capability. Which FET's are you talking about ? I am seeing only DRV8332/-HT that can handle upto 13 A, but I believe the customer is looking for more current handling capability.

As far as safety, this is for a single test stand and not something that would be a production item. Safety is obviously important, but not as critical in this case.

Let me know if you could point me to potential options on this.

I appreciate your support on this.

    Regards,

    Kishen
  • Kishan,

The DRV8332 belong to the portfolio "Brushless DC Drivers with FETs." We do not have a device with integrated FETs to support those currents.

The customer will need to select a device from our "Brushless DC gate drivers" portfolio or "Brushless DC Gate Drivers for Safety Applications" portfolio. The DRV8323R could be a good choice for them. The outputs of this part will drive the gates of external FETs. You can suggest devices from our NexFET portfolio that I linked above to go with the DRV8323.
