DRV8302: DRV8302 to be used with two phase motor

Part Number: DRV8302

Can I use DRV8302 with two phase motor - or there exists some other more appropriate part for usewith two phase brush motor?

I started drawing schematic - and then I wanted to make sure if there will be no problem if I do not use third half bridge.

In that case is it ok to leave lines hanging in air or should I tie them to GND?

Also if I use M_PWM to 3.3V (without need of INL lines), should I tie thouse to GND or is it ok to leave them float?

regards

  • Hi Zhivko,

Yes, you can use the DRV8302 with a two phase motor. There could be a better choice depending on the motor specifications. What are the voltage and current requirements?

If you are using M_PWM set high, it is recommended to connect the unused INL_x and INH_x to a logic zero. SL_x should be connected to GND. GL_x, GH_x. SH_x can be connected through a 1kOhm resistor to GND, which will indicate the low side of the unused phase is on.

  • Hi,

I need to drive 2 brush motors each 5A-10A(start coditions), by 30V.

I know drv8302 is not optimal since one phase will be left out, but I have reference design, already ytested and people use it:

Another question I have is why there is only two shunts on drv8302, but there are three phases - so 3 shunts will be more logical is this compromise of a sort?

If you think there is more suitable gate driver with current sense with amplifier please let me know.

  • Hi Zhivko,

    The DRV8302 would work.

The number of shunts required depends on the BLDC algorithm.

For trapezoidal, a single shunt is needed.
For sinusoidal, two or three are required. Two can be used because the sum of the currents equals zero. Three are also used.
  • On page 25 of datasheet, I see no vias on phase 3 "shunt" toward GND. Can you check if there should be no VIAS there as it is shown on page 25 datasheet? I marked them red on picture copied from datasheet.

  • Hi Zhivko,

Yes, there should be vias at the location highlighted. Thank you for pointing this out.
